Hello,

I don't know how this happened as the camera and len(ses) were in a bag but the end of the lens isn't parallel to the rest of it anymore. The bit that moves in and out to focus looks like it's been banged and one side has moved in. The camera can't auto focus nor can I turn the focus rings with my fingers.

Is there any chance a good shop can mend it? I REALLY hope so!

Is there anything I can do? I've never looked inside a camera or lens but am generally pretty handy at 'fixin' stuff'!

The lens is an 18-55mm Canon. The kit lens.

Thanks a lot

I very much doubt that you will be able to effect a repair. As for a professional repair it will probably cost you more than buying a good second hand 18-55.

Time for the bin I suspect.

:(

Thanks a lot for the reply.

If anyone wants to post back and say it can be done easily / cheaply, feel free! lol

As above repair cost would be far more than the price of a similar replacement lens

Good excuse to buy a new lens

But... the thing is... me and the wife had a £20 budget for Christmas. I stuck to it. She bought me a £500 watch!*

*we're not rich. It was a massive surprise / extravagance. Esp. after buying me the DSLR the previous year.

I've found a 2nd hand EFS 18-55mm for 30GBP (not as bad as I thought it might be). That's with a few hours to go on eBay so will have to see what happens. The problem is, I live in Asia and won't be back in the UK until July. I love my EF F1.8, 50mm but not as the only lens for 5 months so'll have a go at fixing it.

Should I start a new thread asking for specific help getting the lens apart?

I've got the rubber grip off and removed the 6 screws that guide the rotating barrel. How do I remove the circular plastic bit at the very end of the lens as in the pic below?

Mine isn't raised like the one in the photo. It sits below a lip (on the internal cutout) that holds the convex part of the actual lens.

Thanks.
