Broken Canon 500D - help needed

Was just putting my camera onto my tripod and somehow the little round-switch for changing modes came off my camera and fell to the floor. Think the strap must have brushed along it, but can't believe it was hard enough to take it off.

I tried placing it back on but it seems like the plastic which held it on has snapped.

Can this be repaired? Not even sure what actually happened for it to fall off, never mind how to fix it!!

Any help would be great.
 
Just phoned a repair shop local to me and was quoted an estimated £108 to fix it :(

Apparently will need a whole new top part. Absolutely devastating as I had my eye on a 35mm F/2.
 
You could certainly get a replacement dial from Canon which should be easily fitted once the top plate is off, unfortunately with the design of the 500D, to get the top plate off you have to remove every other body plate from the bottom, back and front as well as disconnecting quite a few ribbon cables etc. and the last piece of body plating that can be removed is the top part :bang: (Typical, damn!) A lot of fiddly bits abound.

If you own precision tools and have disassembled electronic equipment successfully in the past then you may want to have a go, otherwise leave well alone and send to an authorised repair centre for a quote.
 
Personally I'd get to work with a spot of superglue but contact Canon for a replacement.
 
It needs a whole new top plate ? Wow, I would have thought that was a replaceable part. Was that A.J. Johnstones by any chance ?. They are very good, I have used them in the past.
 
Have to agree with Richard if you are going to shell out £108 for a complete replacement top plate anyway then trying a little VERY delicate gluing may be worth a try.

Yes, sorry, that's what the fella on the phone said - would need a whole new top plate.

And yes it was, the guy was really helpful! Now just debating with myself over whether it's worth paying the £108 to fix it, or just get a new body.
 
This has happened to me. I had it repaired in Jessops for £60 but it took nearly 2 weeks. It doesn't need a whole new top plate, but you do get the entire assembly repaired. They won't just glue to piece back on, they'll replace everything in that small circular area.

I phoned Jessops for a rough estimate and they mentioned that when they send it away for repair, they charge £25 for an estimate regardless of taking it up or not - then the guy pointed me in the direction of the repair store which I phoned thereafter.

Did the £60 include that £25 cost for the estimate?
 
Have you tried phoning Canon @ Elstree for a quote ? Will give you an idea of how competitive Jessops and the independent shop were...

Personally, if it's a clean break off, then I think I'd be having a go at a repair myself as Richard suggests - if it needs a complete new piece, then nothing to loose really. I'd be tempted to use some airfix glue (designed for plastic) ...

Hope you get it sorted out...
 
Dab of Araldite will soon sort that out, get the original one that you need to mix from two tubes
