Yes
So the flash hit the ground this weekend and has just noticed that the built in defuser has came off, i have the small plastic strip that holds the defuser but not the actual part that goes over the front.

Now i am not bothered about loosing that its the fact that it thinks the defuser is down so is stuck at 14mm. After some poking around i can see that there is a small hole and with some card cut the right shape i can get the flash to think the defuser is back in and all back to normal.

So do i possibly try take it apart and stick something permanently in that hole or get it looked at, if so where, just back to Canon..?

If its a bit hard to understand from the text let me know and i will get some pictures up tomorrow.

Thanks,

Tyler

On Nikons there's a menu option where you can say "the diffuser is broken off". Maybe Canons too.

Yes. Not that it will help you but from the SB28 manual

If the built-in wide flash adapter is broken off accidentally, it is no longer possible to set 18 or 20mm. In this case, press the zoom and sel buttons simultaneously for approx. 4 sec. until the zoom-head position indicator starts blinking,

I don't believe it's possible to do this, I removed the wide angle diffuser from my 430EX II once in order to fit my home made catchlight card. The flash stuck itself at 14mm (you can tell when because it flashes constantly). This wasn't so much of a problem though because most of the time I used it in that way I was shooting at 18mm with the flash aiming behind me at 45 degrees, although when using it directly with the stofen it was overexposing a lot and I had to dial in -2EV on the flash compensation.

I put the WAD back in and it's fine now.

I believe there's some sort of switch which the WAD presses on when it's in anything other than its fully seated position (even if you only pull it out half way it will stay in 14mm mode), if you are competent with disassembly then go ahead and take it apart and see if you can stick the switch down somehow. If not then definitely do not try.

Hi Tyler,

First off the WARNING...... These units contain capacitors that will give you an electric shock at best or electrocute you (read KILL YOU) if you don’t know what your doing. Just removing the batteries will NOT discharge them so you have been warned :nono:

If you do choose to go for it, this link shows a 580EX II being repaired and should show you where the screws are to strip the unit.

I'd like to second that. I took a small flash unit apart in my teens and got the biggest belt of my life from the capacitor, worse than a mains shock :(. Stupidly, after I recovered, I picked up the capacitor and got a second shock. I dont muck about with capacitors any more and that took place 30yrs ago......

Yeh i thought taking it a part would be a bit to much, think i will leave it for now. I have a bit of cardboard rammed in there atm with a bit cut out to poke in the hole so i can use the zoom. :)

If i wanted this repaired where would i have to take it and any idea on price.?

Cheers

When I had my 580EX II repaired by Canon it cost me £180 (half the price of the unit).

Expect it to be expensive.

I'll leave a bit of cardboard jammed in it for now. I bought it of here for £140 so won't pay that to repair it

I've broken the diffuser off my 580 twice now. Around £80-90 to fix from fixation
