hiya guys, just recently i lent my camera to a friend and they tried to put the CF card in the wrong way and bent a couple of pins. I managed to move the pins back into place and the CF card now fits fine.

The problem is when i turn the camera on all that appears is the EOS writing in the top left corner and nothing else. when i then turn the camera off the EOS stays there untill i take the battery out.

Any Ideas what is wrong and how i can fix it.

If you photos to explain what i mean just ask and ill take them today :)

Did the camera work OK before you bent the pins back? (i.e. could your friend have broken something else as well?)

If it did, then I'm guessing some of the circuitry behind the pins is damaged also. Sounds like a Canon repair job to me.

Ian.

Sounds like a write off, I reckon the repair bill would be far more than the camera's worth

Good excuse to treat yourself

The camera worked before the pins were bent then when i got the camera back i charged the battery up pushed the pins carefully back into position and now it only comes up with the EOS in the corner. Its a bummer cause im going to newyork in 2 weeks and i dont have the money to repair it atm

You can have it repaired for £85 (Ebay) or maybe less if you search a bit so if the camera is worth more than that to you then it is an option.

Be careful trying to bend the pins back into place, you can easily snap one off and if it falls into the camera it could short the whole thing

Shouldn't you be asking your friend to pay the repair/replacement cost?

i could but they wont pay up not worth the hassle. has anyone got any Cannon EOS camera bodys for sale. I only have £150 though :/ or know somewhere i can get one for that price

The moral of this story. "if you value it, don't lend it out":bat:

If they broke it when you lent it to them (for free?) then they should definitely pay for a new one or at least contribute, surely? You shouldn't have to pay for a new one.

Unlucky, anyway!

yeah thanks andrew. im going to take it down there today. ive looked on ebay for just eos bodys and im winning on a couple of 20D's so i can always flog this body for repairs on ebay and get around £40 for it :)

If you do get stuck chap on a bike site I use was selling a 300D with 4 Batteries and 1GB card for 130 quid

Fair chance he still has it, let me know if you are interested

Cheers

Just powered up my old 300D, the first thing that happens is you get the EOS up on the LCD and then after a couple of seconds the rest of the data bursts into life. I think you've done mortal damage, considering the camera is worth about £120 second hand. I'll be selling mine in a few weeks when I get access to a Nikon backup, bit late for you though.

hiya thanks gordon :) but i have just bought a 400D for £180 :)

do you stil have that broken canon 300D camera? i broke my display and i cant find any

I'd still get the 'friend' to stump up some of the money for the replacement camera.

It takes some effort to put the CF card in the wrong way then bend the pins back - the CF cards are shaped with a lip so its quite obvious if its being put in incorrectly.

Glad you've a new one sorted.

I appreciate you may not want to ask your friend for money towards the repair, but I am surprised you're friend hasn't even offered to pay towards the repair, esp as they broke the camera and you've had to buy a new one.

Enjoy your new camera (and don't lend it out !!)
