Hi All,

Today after 100 odd photo's, my 40d clonked and clunked and produced only blank photo's. When i removed the lens i saw a small piece of plastic fall out and when i pressed the shutter release the sensor didnt move.

The body was new in April. Do i have a leg to stand on with regards to warrenty, and if so would i have to send it away ( and to who? ) or would a local shop do warrenty work on behalf of Canon?

Any recomendations for a good repair place in Hampshire (im based near Southampton).

Sorry if any ofmy questions sound a tad silly!

Cheers, Andy

(By the way the body had never been dropperd)

Can you take it back to the shop you bought it from? or send it?

Is it a UK camera?

You should have no problems getting it fixed under warranty if it is .... Have a look at your warranty card for a list of repairers.

Sounds like it's only the focus screen thingy, do a search on here and there is instructions on how to replace it.

small plastic thing don't sound like a focus screen to me, and you would clearly see if the focus screen had dropped out, if it's under a year old and purchased in the uk phone canon uk and arrange to send it in.
Even if it was the focus screen I would still send it in because they dont just drop out.

At the bare minimum there's a 1 year warranty; at least, as long as you purchased in the UK. Return it with your receipt and the shop will either RMA it or point you in the direction of the local approved repairer. When my 350D broke, it was quicker for me to head along to the repair centre myself [as it was only a few miles down the road in Stoke.] The repairer will pass on the bill to Canon UK upon presentation of the receipt, and you won't have to outlay a penny.

It's one of the reasons I'd never buy a body from abroad, no matter how much cheaper I could get it; although an international warranty probably applies, I myself feel it's worth the extra peace of mind. Lehman's in Stoke has a dismantled Canon displayed - my, there's a lot going on in that plastic case...

Yep, now that I have re read it I tend to agree. :bang:

Its under a year old it gets replaced/fixed for free. Thats the rules. I'd push for a replacement. Take it back and be pleasant but firm

Thanks fpr your replies guys. Hopefully that Warrenty will come to my rescue. As i was driving home yesterday i was a tad worried.

The body was acctually a gift from my best mate just before him and his Mrs departed for Australia, so it was even more gutting because of that. The only slight concern is that the only form of recipt he gave me was the delivery note which doesnt have the price on. It does have my mates name, address (well old address), product code, customer ID, Manifest No and date on. Think this will be okay?

It is a UK camera and it was purchashed from Emire direct who are based in Leeds

Im hoping they will replace the body really as a few niggles have crept in over the las couple of month's.

The delivery note from Empire should be enough. It shows the date the camera was dispatched and was from a UK source.

You will need to explain that it is a gift and therefore the original address and name is different.

A phone call to Canon service should be the first thing you do and explain what's happened. They will then tell you what the correct procedure to get the camera fixed is

I have spoken to Canon. They told me to send it to them with the proof of purchase. Fingers crossed they will sort it.

Thanks again for all your help people - Its all stress!! Its good to rant!

Cheers, Andy

make sure you tell them bout all the other little niggles, get em all fixed at the same time under warranty;)

I did mention them and will also put it in writing when i send it to them later this afternoon - They said its very rare they replace the camera. Im already feeling lost without a working body (well D30 doesnt really count as a working body does it!)

Im going to keep my eye out for a reasonably priced 20d or 30d as i desperately need a spare body.

Just to update- I sent the 40d body last Monday and have today had a text from Canon to say it has been repaired and it will be delivered shortly. I just hope it comes back without any faults but have to say im impressed with the speed they have repaired it. Big Thumbs up - and thanks Canon!

glas to hear canon are doing a good job, touch wood my camera doesn't break on me

good on ya! - things like this happen but as long as the kit is legit you dont need to worry!
