Having a browse on the interweb with my MBP on me lap - closed the screen but didn't realise a flap on my combat pants pocket was trapped in the hinge.... closed the lid and 'CRAAAAACK!!'... now the bottom edge of the screen casing has peeled away from the hinge and screen, and it won't close. Just what I need when I have a week of jobs that are all going to need a fair bit of archiving and PPing.

Proper gutted :)

Is it one of the ones that had a known problem with the hinges?

You never know, it may have broken due to the hinge being weak anyway and apple may repair it for you without charge.

Indeed. For them a cheap repair out of warranty could quite possibly give them a customer for life.

User error methinks. Plus, it's a few years old, so out of warranty...

Apple have a five year warranty on parts. Just got my entire keyboard, trackpad, surround replaced for the second time and I bought mine in 2007.

Don't write them off so soon, take it into the store and they should be able to fix it free of charge.

Cool - will double up as an excuse for the missus to do some window shopping in MK. Fingers crossed...

If you don't succeed the first time, try another apple store- the logic board on my MBP died (known hardware issue) and the birmingham branch were having none of it- they quoted me £800 to fix it out of warrantee. I took the laptop to the slightly posher store in upmarket Solihul and the hardware fault was fixed for free
