Yes
hey everyone
is there any of knowing/finding out what the maximum broadband speed I should/could expect to be piped into my house? :)

There's a site that gives you a comprehensive list of the isps in your area, the maximum speed you can expect plus a load of other useful stuff. Unfortunately I don't have a link for it, but I'm sure I took a screencap of the results for my isp, so I'll have a look and see if I can find the site from that for you....

Is this the sort of data you were after? I still can't remember what the site address was though, perhaps someone else can help with that....

I thought that's exactly what I did!

It depends what part of town your in Ben, chunks of the town are really bad, BT were supposed to have upgraded the exchange in town not sure if they have yet or not, there are large areas where cable has not been put down yet so it's BT line based supplier or dongle only.

thanks for the info guys, and thanks for the local input Ian!
I can great connection (15mb), but my folks' is pretty poor (1.8mb) so just wondering what they should expect to get. they do have a pretty old router, so it might be a good start to upgrade that. though i guess that's no guarantee of any improvement...

So many factors, but distance from the exchange and cable make up are the two that usually have the most effect on a copper served line

So, is 40mb/s a good result if you have a 50mb/s account?

Kev.

I'm a dinasour, so bear with me. Why does it change when you try it again and again?

Sorry if it's a stupid question.

Looks like you changed the location to test from. Manchester then Leeds.

I gave up on Virgin and the others because of all the lies they kept spouting and the prices and now have a dongle by 3.

I have a 2 year contract and for £16.00 a month get 15Gb a month.

Speeds aren't brilliant but I can take the dongle with me anywhere I want so much more convenient.

And with no phone lines to install what they quote is what you pay.

An I now have it hooked up to a cheap router to feed 2 PCs.
