Went down completely again yesterday and then again this morning

BT customers still feeling the affect of broadband outage
Digital / UK

Broadband users across the UK, including large parts of Scotland, have been cut off when another fault was suffered by provider BT.

This was the third major fault experienced by the communications provider in the last five days and hit customers in Scotland, the North of England and Northern Ireland.

Last weekend, 20,000 customers were hit by a ‘similar technical problem’ with BT contacting customers to explain that it was monitoring several BT exchanges which showed DSL faults affecting large numbers.

“This is a critical BT outage affecting many ISPs using the BT DSL network,” the message explained.

The message also suggested that customers leader the modem/router plugged in and powered on to allow service to be restored.

It is understood that some customers were still without broadband this morning.

Our work internet went down yesterday presumably from all the troubles, but all I had to do was reboot the system (modem etc). Worth a shot just in case it's fixed and you just need to reboot the modem.

I cannot honestly remember the last time I lost an internet connection  But I cannot seem to get my graph to look like yours though  ;)

lost connection...how about 3x daily..?

see the number at the top of mine...? 750 kbps max EVER.........

now do people understand when I lose my rag when they post AGAIN all 4 images of the OP post and say................"nice captures"..............:bang:

Unless you are using a particularly rubbish browser or have disabled cacheing it will not download the images more than once on a given page.

....Firefox 3.6.12

disable cache - wouldn't know how to..!

OP puts up 3 images

replier posts them again in his thread - seems to take ages to load the page

still ---- with my download speeds....

That is not good John :shake: Hope things get back up to speed for you asap

Never had a bit of bother here, so far.

Maybe there is a small advantage to Tiscali after all!

surely the ISP still depends upon the BT overhead line to the house ... so no difference...?

Yes. Sort of. The maximum througput that the line will sustain to the exchange is determined by its length and condition, combined with the type of ADSL in use (ADSL Max / ADSL2 / ADSL2 + annex M) and the quality of your household internal telephone wiring.

The throughput you achieve to a (for example) broadband speed test page is dependent on far more than that. Including:
throughput in the IP network between the DSLAM in the telephone exchange and the connection from the IP network to your ISP
capacity on the connection to your ISP
capacity on your ISP's connections to the internet
capacity on the routeing from your ISP to the remote site
capacity on the links from the internet to the remote site

contention at any of those points could cause a reduction in the measured speeds.

Some ADSL ISPs use the BT line then their own equipment in the exchange and own IP network, removing the BT IP networks from the equation. That doesn't necessarily mean it will be any better as other networks can also fail, it just means problems are less likely to be reported as a failure at BT is newsworthy.

To give you an example of why internal wiring is important, when I moved in a couple of months ago I connected the router to the BT master socket with an extension reel of cable running across the hall, there being no power outlet in the hall for the router, nor anywhere sensibly close either. The sync speed settled to 2400kbps down / 1600kbps up. Last week I ran cat5e through the loft and down into the lounge and the study, connected extension sockets in both rooms and the two cables into the removable backplate of the master socket.

Result was my sync speed is now 3400kbps down / 1650kbps up. One extension lead was knocking 1Mbps off the speed the router would sync at.

I live about two miles from the exchange.

No, the problem isn't in the local loop (cabling from local exchange to the house) but rather in the network backbone (fibre trunks and high speed microwave links between major network centres). Thus have their own infrastructure and so do other major telecoms suppliers.

I may be assuming things here  but I have also noticed my virgin broadband speed slower in last few days. Only yesterday I was downloading a file and was getting speed less than 100. At the same time my browser surfing was taking longer than usual.

They have their own equipment at the exchange.

I just checked my speed and it is an unheard of 6.4mbps cf the 3.2mbps I have had all year till now!

this is what I have had to do - wireless router in lounge near power outlet - connected to Master socket in hallway with 15m BT tel extension cord.. Mistake...?

Last week I ran cat5e through the loft and down into the lounge and the study,

what's cat5e..?.......cheers

edit just done a google on cat5e.....

Mine is pants John

well I'm 4 miles from the exchange on a bit of wet string, and have NEVER been above 750kbps ---- so count your blessings mate ....;)

I'm with Virgin media and have never had any problems

I'm with BT, connection via a set of powerplugs, always seems to be pretty constant.

Edit
Sorry, just noticed this is related to Scotland, ignore me.

Not been home this week, but I know last week had to restart the home hub about 10 times a day! It's very slow too, as always :(

quickie b4 work

had router in lounge connected to BT Master Socket in hall with a standard BT Telephone extension cord

speed last night = 450kbps.....

this AM - plugged router into BT Master Socket in hall
ran AC power cord to Router ...............................856kbps..

So.. tel ext cord is rubbish solution

can I buy a cat5e extension cord with
male plug - to go into filter into Master socket
female on the other end to accept Router plug

later.......................

In a word ....no

Cat 5 plugs are RJ45 plugs
Phone lines use RJ11 plugs, they're smaller than RJ45 plugs but look similar.

Do you mean you want a phone extension lead made from cat5 cable?

was this "extension reel of cable" a standard BT 15m ext cord like you get from Comet...?

just covering all possibilities here..?

yes you can get a cable with a rj11 on one end and a rj45 on the other end but might not be as long as you need (could make own).

thanks all - ok, Router in master Socket = 856kbps = acceptable
just replaced box faceplate and plugged router into socket on faceplate
crap with large C - dropped to 179kbps = so a fault there...
back into master Socket = 720kbps

get BT to replace outlet box...£??? and internal wiring to lounge socket [maybe] = £????

OR as it's a rented cottage just use the Master Socket..:)
if i want the router in the lounge, I "think" i need a cat5e ext cord with a modem type plug at each end - "link" - one into hall filter and one into Router

thanks for all the help - should keep me busy sorting alternatives.....

The other thing I forgot to mention this morning was you need to test both 'methods' at approximately the same time as the internet usage in your area will be greater on a Sunday night than a Monday morning thus slowing down your speed.

Rather than relying on "speed test" sites, the thing to check is the sync speed, which you can find out by logging in to the router itself. This is unaffected by contention at the DSLAM. That said, contention at the DSLAM is a problem from a decade ago, it shouldn't be a problem nowadays..
