Broadband Recommendations....

.... Virgin media are still winding me up with a second rate tv service, so rather than winge like my grandma does (her favorite saying is something about all you can do is moan) I am looking for alternative solutions.

I am getting a normal tv aerial so I will watch freeview - which is what I get now with virgin media anyway, my phone will go back to BT (gets rid of random ex [bunny boiler] 's at the same time), and so now all I need is a new broadband provider,

does anyone have an experiences or recommendations?

i use www.houxou.com
they are a very small company so you dont have to worry about all the nonsense you get with big companies (like call centres in india)
they arent as cheap as the big companies, but they are very reliable.
I think i've been with them for about 8 years now.
IIRC 2 meg broadband is about £22 a month (not as fast as others, and not as cheap, but no hidden download limits and all that)

I switched to Sky Max a few months ago, and get around 1.5mb / second download and good uploads as well.

No limits and no throttling of P2P that i have been aware of.
 
A vote for Zen here, :thumbs: i've been with them for over 4 years now. Sure they're not the cheapest around, but the service is excellent.

No idea what the customer support is like as the connection has never gone down, so i've never had to call them !
 
I am with Virgin and I have no problems with them but I do have the full package of TV and broadband. My download speeds are always good and the TV service is just the same as Sky but without sky1 and skysportsnews and if you watch ssnews for 15 miutes its the same thing over again so no loss there.

To go past Virgins download limit you must be using some pretty big files or the illegal stuff:nono:.

My bill is less than £80 a month all in and a fast broadband of over 10 megs (and it works).

Virgin media has many extras too. look on their home page.
 
Depends what you are after - Speed, Customer Service, Minimum Contact Length, Price, Free Hardware?

Personally I use eclipse internet they offer unlimited(ish) broadband from less than £15 per month if you aren't too fussed about speed at peak times (with standard surfing it's fine) and they have no minimum contract (unless you get free hardware). I am more than happy with their service, and if you choose to go with them please enter the referer code as SIMONTALM or use the link I've given here as I think I get a credit on my account.

I have used Zen in the past and was happy with them but I decided to change provder when I moved house 2 years ago and had to pay another activation fee. I decided on eclipse because they offered the same service for less money and at the time offered flexible speed internet on demand for a few pence per hour (perfect for occasional downloads).

Though Be Broadband (as mentioned above) does look quite interesting especially thier pro package with the extra upload speed - perfect for hosting your own web server, all with only a 3 month notice period too (better than most).
 
If you're on the same exchange as me Rob, Tiscali aren't too bad. Been with them for a couple of years and in the region of 5200 down and 500 up. Not too shoddy. Think its around £15 or £16 or £17 pcm

i am on pipex 8 meg complete with phone £30 a month good speeds no problems here:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:
 
Where do I start :D

Switching to a conventional line is great news as it gives you flexibility in the future rather than being tied in to one supplier. You need not use BT to install a new line. Some (but not all) other providers can now do this for you - and save you money.

If there is a dormant BT line to your house then there is a good chance that it can be resurrected for £25. Otherwise a new line install will cost £99 (with my favoured firm ;) ) as opposed to £125.

Whoever installs or reconnects your line, you could do far worse than £19.99 per month INCLUDING line rental for an upto 8mbps broadband. This rate applies if your local exchange has been LLU'ed - otherwise the cost is a little more. I think you will find your local exchange is OK.

And you will also receive a reward of free outgoing calls to 01 & 02 numbers - the more services taken, the more times when you can make free calls :)
