We are looking at moving home soon and found a really nice rural area.....Problem is that the broadband will struggle with video streaming apparently..... What are the options bar the usual telephone broadband connection?
 
None. Unless there is an independent super fast wifi service around.

3G will be too slow too.

If broadband is important a slow service will drive you nuts. Definitely check via the telephone number to see what the actual speed is.

We are not aware of superfast plans for this area. Saying that, the UK Government is investing millions to ensure 95% of the UK can receive superfast coverage of 25Mbps and above by 2017, and 99% by 2018.

N.B. That would be 95% of the population, not the country by area.

91% of the UK population lives in Urban or Town fringe areas, just 8.8% in villages [Source: ONS]. 80% of the population lives within just 20% of the area country.

The 99% figure for 2018 includes wireless technologies, such as 4G mobile broadband.
 
Personally I wouldn't move anywhere with such awful broadband speed. In future it's going to be harder and harder to sell properties that don't at least offer basic streaming speeds.

What speed do you have at home at the moment?
 
72 Mbps...... totally ridiculous..... but this is the price I pay for living in Rural Berkshire
 
Stay put. Such a speed difference will be really annoying. If you only had a 3 or 4 mb connection then it wouldn't be noticeable.

There are pockets of decent rural broadband. You have to scour the right areas though.
 
I will just have to keep on looking.....no option as we need more room...... I thought when the kids left home we were safe to down size... How wrong we were :eek: We have gain a new grandson, my daughters partner and my son has decided to come back home during the weekends..... plus all the in laws and my family have started to travel from Ireland to visit us.... plus I would like somewhere for a man room/studio (y)
 
Average broadband speeds are on rightmove now so it makes it a lot easier. Keep looking :thumbs:

1. Different house in a better (in internet connectivity terms) area.
2. Private circuit with backhaul to an ISP point of presence. Also known as a leased line. You can have that as fast as you want it, but might not like the costs.
3. Satellite. Suffers with latency and I believe the data costs are high compared to normal consumer broadband (still nowhere near leased line territory).

Relatively slow internet connection speed a the price one often pays for living in the middle of nowhere (like no mains gas, or even no mains sewerage in some places). Only you can decide how important the speed of your internet connection is as a factor in deciding what house to buy.

I get just over 3Mbps here, I knew that was what I was likely to get when I moved, but the only online video I'm concerned about is iplayer and I can download those in advance rather than streaming. I simply discounted houses much further from the exchange from consideration when I was looking, no matter how lovely and remote they were.
 
Remember the internal wiring also has a large impact on speed so it may be slower than that :D

I used to live in a flat near the center of town and exchange and only got 2mbps with a tail wind.

If you can drum up enough local interest you could try approaching virgin. No guarantee they'll run the cable in or whether it'll be at all possible in your area mind.
 
I live in a rural area where the phone line Broadband is about 1 meg. However we were blessed by an independent supplier who provided fibre to the house. I did quite a bit of research into Satellite Broadband, Not SKY, but actual broadband using a dish and connecting to a satellite. There are a number of providers, and it is expensive, but it may be your only alternative. Expect to pay an installation fee and a hefty monthly fee, and the dish is quite big and needs un obstructed line of sight Just Google Satellite Broadband.

a; Caravan in the Garden
b; Convert the Loft
c; build an Extension
d; say sorry, No room and mean it
 
When buying our rural property in Sussex last year the Broadband speed was quoted at 1.98 Mb/s. The property was too good to miss and suited us perfectly, so that was my compromise. However, since moving in I complained to BT loads about the line speed and they tweaked the line and put a new master socket in and we gained speeds up to 8 Mb/s. This is ample enough for my needs and can easily stream HD content as a single user with others browsing the internet.

I did investigate Satellite broadband but the data cost was too much and didn't warrant the outlay. The only other viable alternative I could find at the time was a Long Range Wireless broadband provider - http://www.kijoma.net/tiki-index.php?page=how . I would have signed up with them if they had responded to my numerous enquiries.
 
Sell up move back to the city, our broadband isn't too bad.................:D

I should point out this is not my supplier and the speedtest is one from a broadband forum - still genuine speeds though.

Have you had a check done for FTTPoD or FoD (Fibre To The Premises on Demand / Fibre on Demand, a lot of checkers do not take this into account as it is still an early adoption tech. Worth checking!

Other than that, satellite has some good offerings now, but although the speed is better, there is still initial latency issues.
