British Fireworks Championships (Southport)

Aw, the best bit about it was getting the reflections over the lake :(

i'll be there on saturday :)

They're doing alot of building/maintenance work in Kings Gardens including the bridge over the lake at the moment so wouldn't be suitable for all the people attending, hence using Victoria Park :)

So did anyone go? I did, and didn't bother getting the camera out, ok I did but only to see what I could get. Took the 8-15 fisheye, 16-35 and 24-70 just in case.
The tree lined path was the worst location ever for a firework display, all you can see are trees when you look up, then you have the poor very directional sound system that unless your in front of it you can only hear a muffled very bass heavy sound track.
First display was awesome big and great music. and the distance between you and the launch site wasn't as noticeable.
The 2nd display was quite small which made the distance very noticeable.

Photos are to give you an idea, hand held and not what I would hope to have got.

So here you see the trees in the way, and the make shift lighting they put up in the park hanging off the trees

A bit brighter and you can see the firing point is behind some even bigger trees and see the gaps (or lack of gap) between the trees on the other side of the field

2nd display and they look even further away than the first, ok shot on the fish eye pretty wide but their display didn't get much bigger.

I went with some friends to take some pics. We stayed outside of the paid area, and ended up on Rotten Row, just outside the park. As we were walking down the row looking for the best view, my friend went over to ask a couple of photographer chaps coming out of the park if we was OK to set up on the row, because it was blocked off to traffic. They said that the stewards for the event would be coming down the row before the event to clear the row. And that we should go and pay to get in.

When my friend told me that, and then watched the chaps set up themselves on the hill on the row, I said I can't see that happening. There were a couple of Police Officers further down the road so I went and asked whether they were going to clear the road, they said they hadn't heard of any plans to do that.

I think the other photographers we asked were talking BS, and it was quite nasty thing to do, saying that we should go and pay to get in, when they themselves were coming out of the paid area, if they knew what they were doing. :nono:

As for the new location and the displays, it's not an ideal location, and hopefully it will return to the Marina when the building work is finished there. I'm not sure what the views were like all around the park, but I think it is quite an enclosed location. The start was delayed as there were still people entering the park. God knows how they will cope tonight with 3 displays and many many more people.

The first display was good, but the 2nd display was poor imho. Prog Rock shouldn't be in a firework display for me. :shake: ;)

Possibly going tonight, but if previous years are anything to go by, there were be lots more spectators and will be a lot busier.

Tonight was still busy, gates opened early I think and they had 3 gates open not just 2 but the ticket booths are at the gates so people were queuing for tickets and not entry so lots of annoyed people about, they also added a few exits I believe one on to Rotten way. But they still delayed the start. I got there early walked up to the booth and then just walked straight in I did ask as I already had a ticket and the steward directed me down the side. Sound was also vastly improved.

The 3 displays were a lot better, the fact the music was known really adds to the display and the wall of fireworks from the first display was incredible. Then the 3rd display WOW the aerial shells were loud and the sound was bouncing back off the houses on rotten way.

After Last night Komodo would have won hands down but tonight's 3 were good as well.

There are some of my pics from the Sunday night...
