Britain's most photogenic castles?

Not quite a castle, but you've got the Alamo!;)

The Alamo is rubbish, if you can get the tourists out of the way then you have the particularly unforgiving light to deal with. (and there really isn't much to see)

But the tourists won't budge anyway.

One of my Holy Island pics. (alright I know the castle's only a bit of it)

and yes, the horizon's off.

Nice atmospheric shot of the castle and island - did you set up the artefacts in the foreground?

:clap:What a great thread this is going to save me a lot of research.

Thanks for the comment Tylersladen, how's this? : -

Some great castles in Northumberland. If your a real castle nut it is worth joining English Heritage, loads of castles and get in for free with your card.

Heres Bamburg from a different view

Love the flowers in the foreground Steve. As you say, English Heritage membership is a great idea (if you live in England!) - Historic Scotland and Cadw are the Scottish and Welsh counterparts. I've been a member of Historic Scotland for years - it's great value. A visit to Edinburgh & Stirling castles and the cost is pretty much covered. You also get half-price admission to the English & Welsh properties in the first year, free in subsequent years of membership (vice-versa for EH & Cadw).

have to be a vote for Arundel from me

No I didn't, I just got lucky, it was early Sunday morning in December and there was no one around to get in the way.

It's a great shot Graeme- the light, the tide. I love the place, and need to get back to get some pics this spring.

Cant Believe anyone has not said the picture postcard fav in scotland of Elieen Donan (Think that's how it's spelt!) Castle.

Im a local to Midlothian and Edinburgh... so in terms of Local castles I'd say Edinburgh, Chricton, Borthwick, Tantallon.

Another fine Scottish castle is Castle Stalker. On a little island with mountains behind, fantastic.

You're spot on about the Northumbrian castles - Norham on the Tweed is just as you describe, and Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh are all dramatic ruins.

Bamburgh is on Sky TV tonight. Channel 522 (Discovery Knowledge) @ 21:00. There are repeats showing.

Corfe Castle... I am biased as I live 5 miles from it.
Will post up a pic tomorow :)

Lucky man, lovely part of the world - was there in '94. There was a great boozer in the village, it had ale poured direct from the keg which was on a shelf behind the bar. The scrumpy in your part of the world is also something else!:bonk:

Not mentioned here but 2 castles relatively local to me are Warwick and Kenilworth. I especially love photographing Kenilworth against a dark/cloudy sky with a low winter sun making the sandstone almost illuminescent.

But I think each has their favourite, ar'nt we spoilt for castles?

Mark

We're really lucky Mark, our violent and uncertain past has left a wonderful legacy in stone and earth (lets not forget our motte & baileys!).

Kenilworth is on my hit list for this summer.
