Yes
I love castles and I love photography - stating the obvious but my favourites to shoot are substantial ruins rather than 'pristine' edifices such as Windsor, Edinburgh etc. Eilean Donan has just been done to death!

1. Hermitage Castle, Liddesdale. Grim, moody, great light and a bleak backdrop.
2. Corfe Castle, Dorset. Gorgeous, complex ruins.
3. Crichton Castle, Midlothian. Beautiful setting, stunning 16th century Italianate courtyard
4. Dolforwyn Castle, Wales. Secluded, enigmatic.
5. Craigmillar Castle, Edinburgh. Edinburgh's hidden treasure. Stunning stonework, great backdrop of Arthur's Seat and the cityscape.

What are your favourites? Would love to know!:)

come to Pembrokeshire then!

Carew for a start!

Magnificent castle - little Manorbier also well worth seeking out. You Welsh are spoilt for castles - you even let the English come and build some too!;)

Holy Island
Calaverock (sp?)
Durham
Craigmillar
Barnard Castle (if you can get rid of the traffic & Tourists)
Many of the Northumbrian castles that were battered by the Scots - very atmospheric.

I miss castles.

Not quite a castle, but you've got the Alamo!;)

Carlaverock (sp?) is great - apart from the ruins, it's located in a lovely nature reserve, great for shooting birdlife.

You're spot on about the Northumbrian castles - Norham on the Tweed is just as you describe, and Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh are all dramatic ruins.

Bodiam is nice....

It's a corker. A proper, man's, 1970's, castle:thumbs: Got the lot! Pevensey further round the coast has fantastic wall texture where the ashlar has been robbed - great for abstracts!

Was Pevensey once Ashlar then?

I always assumed its unusual appearance was because of its great age, being mainly Roman in construction, and the availability of local flint.

I've never actually visited it, but I've driven past it and admired it always intending to do so. It has a rather sad look I think, since it got abandoned by the sea. I really must make the effort to stop by sometime.

Caerphilly Castle is rather nice too... as is Cardiff Castle.

Ludlow castle is one of the finest around IMHO - but then I am biased, having spent a large chunk of my summer holidays as a teenager in the town.

So many, but Caerphilly is always a favourite (great picture MusicMan) as it's not far from me, but some other favourites are Carreg Cennen, White Castle, Harlech Castle and Raglan Castle :)

Not sure how to insert links, but they can all be found on the CADW website

I've just been looking at some pics of Pevensey and I see what you mean. I'm used to seeing the view from the road which is this one I think http://www.infobritain.co.uk/Pevensey_Castle.htm

I hadn't realised there was so much more to the castle. I'd assumed it was mainly flint from a distant view, like the classic sussex buildings, but I see there is loads more to it (not even sure there is any flint either now I look at the pics)

I really must make time to visit it one day, it looks fascinating.

Bamburgh in Northumberland, taken with the beach and sea in shot. Very striking. Plus it's entirely intact.

Definitely a place to visit.

Dunstanburgh in Northumberland, especially from the North side with the beach included.

My Favourite ones (local ish to me) are Leeds,Arundel,Heaver and Scotney.

They all can be fun (if a little unoriginal!) to photograph.

Bodium as seen is your classic castle as a child would draw one (but crap as a defensive structure!!)... Dover is probably the finest castle in England full stop... Corfe is another favourite of mine.

really really beautiful fairy tale style castle, on the side of a river halfway up a bank covered in trees!

It's sooo beautiful!!

I think you're right trapper, the curtain walls were re-used from a Roman shore fort. Many years since I've been.

What about Pontefract castle its the place beheadings were done ......as most prisoners who were sent there for anything from petty theft to murder knew it was the place not to go (sorry no photo but will get some on my next visit)

Riber Castle, Derbyshire :)

Pickering Castle, North Yorkshire

They're probably my favourites, I can't think of any others just now :)
