Briony's 52 2010 Week 34 SURFACES added 24/08

I like the speed pic,

Much prefer the 1st edit crop in post #93, the space to the left hand side is more pleasing on the eye.

Might just be me but the grass under the tail makes it look like the horse has a 5th leg. haha

Great effort,

Dan

You will have to wait for week 6 I am seriously struggling and then thought of a great idea and then saw Foggyforever had the same thought  - never mind may still do it but still thinking:thinking::thinking:

Well done on capturing the horse - you have managed the focus and got a lovely sensation of speed. You've also caught the lovely gloss of its coat.

The background is a bit busy but in the real world it is not always possible to control these things and you do convey the sense of being there. Has the rider seen it - I am sure she would love a print.

That will teach to you look at other people's offerings before you have done your own! :nono:

Right I know I have still to do Week 6 yet but thought I would put this one in for a joke for PEOPLE

Clearly having a good time somewhere, right bunch of herberts

Taken on the CWLP SHOOT Hope you like it it is a crap piccy :bonk: but wanted to post it anyway hopefully back on track this week with the sound advise picked up today.

:D Great minds think alike, a fine bunch of characters I bet.

It's a nice shot. You've composed it very well and capturing a few smiles is a nice touch.

Lot of Canon's in there :)

Ian.

Looks like fun was had by all, you've captured the scene/mood well

Nicely composed, what a shady looky bunch they are :D

You're image has invoked a feeling in me I've not experienced in a while

Lens envy :D

It's the reservoir dogs. Think you've captured the moment well there Briony. I'm sure it wasn't a peeing contest, but that is a big one in the middle

Hehe! Bunch of dodgy looking geezas (and gal) there Briony. Really like it, well done.

Cheers, Rob

A nice fun shot Briony.

I hope you had a good time and picked up lots of tips.
Now come on . . . you need to name and shame. Who do we have there? . . . and who's the shy one hiding in the backgound ?

If they want to name and shame themselves then they can own up. The one with the big one is ?:lol::lol:

Briony, the theme was people, not cameras and big lenses ...

Looks like some fun there... it's on theme... I can't get the theme to "reservoir dogs" out of my head now... (sorry guys...)

You've caught some lovely expressions and poses there - well done!

Bloody hell! That guy at the back looks like he's strapped the public litter bin to the front of his camera!

here is my mechanical I was struggling alot with this one but better late than never, this could also qualitfy as "Play" as this is my toy I like to play with

Tight crop due to the grass around the case.

I think that works great for mechanical and play :D but I may be biased as I enjoy target shooting with my air rifle Air-arms S400

People: I can't help noticing nobody's owned up to being in this pic! It looks liks a good day out, though and there's some very impressive kit on show. :D

Mechanical: I know so little about guns/rifles/pistols, etc, tht I don't even know what the correct term is for this - but it looks immaculate and I love to hear more about it, Briony. :)

Briony, would it not be better to try and come up with an interesting DoF or an unusual composition or something? I mean this in the nicest possibly way (honestly, I do) but the 'people' shot and the rifle shot, while the concepts fit the brief (as it were), I can't help but think they are a bit snappy.

Could this 52 not be a opportunity to push yourself a bit more?

I am trying but if it is not good enough then I will give up.

I don't posess to be the best photographer but I do try, and that is why I undertook this challenge, but perhaps this is not the way for me to go on so I will bow out of the challenge and just take photos of what interests me.

Oi! I have just seen this!
I don't remember signing a model release!

Oh yeah you supplied the cake, that makes us quits  :D

edit I forgot to say, you captured the mood of the day, very well indeed

Don't you dare give up young lady, just because it appears to be a snap shot doesn't mean you didn't puy any planning and preperation into it. Sometimes a great deal of effort is put in just to make it look like a snap shot.
We all pull each others legs some times, I have with you but it was light hearted from me and I will continue to do so.

So chin up and get on with CHEMISTRY!!!!!!!!!!

I may not have worded that very well and I really wasn't trying to offend you. I apologise if I did. I don't think you should stop doing it by any means, just that it would be good if you pushed yourself a bit further. For example, you could have sat the rifle in some long grass and composed the shot looking down the barrel... just something a bit more than a straight pic of a rifle.

Do not let someones views put you of carrying on with your 52 we all have a different interpretation on things photographic

I thought it was mechanical too but obvoiusly not imaginative enough, I did try looking down the barrel and took a photo but there was nothing that said "mechanical" to me in that shot so I posted this one.

I am trying to stick with the theme and as I said, I am trying to be a bit different, but obvoiusly it is not working.

I would have thought the gun is mechanical no matter which angle you look at it from?

Obvioulsy I've offended you so I'll leave you to it, Briony... I do hope you keep going though!

The goal of the 52 is to learn, so don't you dare give up. In fact, shoot the b****r :D

There is something fascinating about a gun, dunno what it is, possibly the chilling efficiency of what it does. I think you could have a lot of fun taking images of this gun, don't just stop at the one, play about with it and see what you come up with. Technically the shot is great

aww hun dont give up !!!
its a good picture of a rifle/gun/shooty thing !!!! and it fits the theme really well
if i was you I would carry on just to prove that you CAN do it (which you can)
good luck with chemistry and please dont give up

Briony,

It seems to me that you are struggling with some of the themes in this years 52. Believe me you aren't the only one :D

Photography is all about taking what you enjoy. If you aren't enjoying it then what is the point? Having said that, I wouldn't want to see you give up at this fairly early stage. Who says you have to follow the themes? Take your own shots of what you enjoy and do a non-themed 52 if it suits you better.

I have to apologise as I hadn't commented on your thread yet :bonk: I'm not going to comment on all of your shots as you already have comments so far.

Curved I like but the highlights are a little distracting. Lighting shiny subjects is not easy and it is something that I cannot get right either. I bet that in time we will both get to grips with it though.

I really like the horse shot. Vey well done.

People may have been submitted as a joke but it is well chosen and certainly has people in it. Sky is a touch blown but not too badly. Certainly closer to the theme than my effort for that week.

Mechanical / play. Not my favourite image but well exposed and sharply focussed. It fits either theme without the use of a crowbar

Please don't give up on this. Take the crit you recieve as being constructive and try to learn from it. I know it can be difficult and some replies can be taken in the wrong manner. This is the problem with the written word instead of spoken it can be misconstrued easily.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Andy,

Thank you and yes I am struggling with this whole 52 thing but thought it might make me a bit more imaginative. The trouble is that my love lies with wildlife, I am not into HDR, self portraits and things like that they just do not interest me, perhaps I should just be a "happy snapper" and enjoy what I like taking photos of. I sat for 3.5 hours today trying to get a good shot of a kite and a buzzard and took nearly 100 photos and binned the lot, perhaps I am trying to be better than I am and want to be, but as you say I have to oush the boundaries a bit that is why I wanted to do the 52 challenge, but the themes really do not inspire me to go out there and take photos but I will try.

Oh well off to bed again with my trusted book "450 guide for dummies"

Nothing like a bit of light bed time reading :)

Have a good nights sleep and you may feel better in the morning. You have a whole week to get a shot in. Swap the camera for a notepad for a few days. Write down any thoughts you have and try and vizualise the shot you want to take before you pick the camera again.

It's not easy but I think the effort will be worth the pain in the end.

Another 8 hours or so and I'll be able to get some sleep :shake: The joys of working nights :(

Briony - I really feel for you. Please don't take comments to heart - at the end of the day it's just somebody's opinion, and nobody's perfect at everything. I find some of the themes leave me stone cold and I'm definitely not into self-portraits or HDR either. But what I do know after doing the 52 last year that even when I hated the theme and produced a shabby photo, I got some satisfaction just from doing it. My big 'result' from last year was getting comfortable with a tripod. I still don't love it - but I can cope with it now. I don't know what I'll gain from this year - but that's just part of the journey.

I, along with lots of other people, are enjoying your thread, so please don't give up. You could always switch to a 52 with your own choice of subjects.

Good luck with whatever you chose, but I hope to see you here next week, and I think most of us will be struggling with Chemistry - I know I will. :D

Jean

Hi Briony:wave: Have only just started my 52 this last week so I'm trying to catch up on everyone(and failing) but have just had a quick look through yours :)

I love you Speed shot, stunning horse.....makes me want to be training point to pointers again!

I like your people shot too you've captured a nice moment and that is a big part to a good photo.....and great for memories! (I have no lens envy...honest!)

Well done for getting a two in one with your latest shot :) nice! How come all your shots are making me yearn for something?:lol::lol:

So lets look at the good points compared to my abilities (or lack of them).

It's on theme.
It's lit well.
It's pin sharp.

What about a crop, something really harsh to turn it abstract?

I know how you feel. I've really struggled more than I've 'breezed through'. There are some seriously good photographers on these boards producing the kind of shots that possibly you and I could only dream of producing but they had to start somewhere. Who knows what thier first efforts were like back in the day when they started out. I don't think you're doing as bad as you think you are and would hate to see you bow out now.

Chin up and get your teeth into chemistry, pm me if you want, bounce some ideas off my thick skull, I may be more of a hinderance than a help but you never know ;)

I shoot mainly in TV mode do you think I should change? and if so what to (trying to stay away from Auto) any suggestions greatfully received.

Thank you
