Briony's 52 2010 Week 34 SURFACES added 24/08

Hi Briony, and I bet you can guess what I'm singing now

I don't blame you at all for wanting to show that picture, it's absolutely gorgeous. Where did you take it?

Really cute little guy. I love the way you've caught him facing directly into the camera with his trunk raised.
Missing feet are a minor niggle for me. Yes I'd like a bit more foreground, but his face is so captivating that I really don't find my eye drawn to the lower part of the shot at all.

Great pic Briony, bit soft but better because of I think. I never knew they got pink bits in there!

Thanks this was shot in the Masai Mara last September, while on Safari there, awesome experience, I have actually got a picture of the whole baby including feet but this was the cutest.

It was shot on Auto I think if I remember rightly and I have not editied it at all.

Sorry Briony, I somehow posted on the first week and missed the second week (John - Dark Star you did the same ;))

What a cute image and the Poem fits nicely.

Heh. Been a long time since I heard that "poem".

It's a great shot. I don't imagine you get much time to compose on Safari. When I'm in panicky mode I do tend to slide the dial to Auto. Trying to get out of that habit though!

Ian.

Still thinking for "Chopped"

I will get there even though it may be a bit late LOL

Chopped is one of those ones where you don't wanna go for the obvious but other than the obvious there doesn't seem much left that's do-able isn't it?

I was talking to my Mam the other day and told her about this weeks theme and her suggestion was...

"you could get a chopper motorbike chopped in half"

Of course, so totally do-able!...They say don't mock the afflicted, but sometimes, you just can't help it!

Believe me I have hunted high and low to take picture of a "chopper bike" even been into shops but can't find one - still thinking of a bit of a different take on this one apart from chopping something up but I may have to resort to this :bang:

Well it has taken me a week and I have failed miserably. I have thought and thought of what to do time is running out so have had to resort to this one.

This is a shot I took last year out in the Masai Mara. Not the best but C & C welcome.

I actually really like that shot, but you have plenty of time left to get a new one in if you fancy a new shot rather than an old one. It's your 52 of course so it's about your own direction.

If you really are stuck for ideas how about.

1. A fresh loaf of bread on a chopping board, just sliced, warm light and the knife still sat next to the bread (think M&S). Get in close and try to use rule of thirds

2. Any piece of fruit sliced in two, up close and well lit to preserve detail. You could stick a slice of lemon on top of a glass of lemonade, say (slice of lemon with a cut to the center, wedged onto the glass).

3. Get a family member to grab a piece of garden equipment (axe, spade, shears, loppers etc) and find anything in the garden to have a go at.

4. Think out of the box and try to take a technically perfect portrait, but cut off the head by "accident".

5. Pork/lamb chops in the frying pan.

6. An onion, sliced and diced.

Plenty of options to be going with. The framing and composition of your shot here look great, I think you have the ability to get a great shot when you see it, you're just hitting a bit of a brick wall for ideas. If you don't like any of the ideas above go and nick one from one of the other 52's. Use them for inspiration. I'm doing this to try to improve my photography, I figure you are probably doing the same, so take whatever steps are necessary to do so. Copy :D

Thanks but I was trying so hard to steer away from the obvious but I think it is going to have to be the obvious:shrug:

I am getting short of time now but will try and replace the shot with one with more meaning instead of playing my joker.

Have such a busy week end though so it may be Monday before I get an image on.

I was hoping the flash I bought on here would have arrived so that would help me with the indoor shots, but it has not so I may have to wait for that.

Thanks anyway.

What's that in the bottom right?

It's a good shot but my eye keeps getting drawn to whatever the hell that is. :) Might be able to enjoy the shot if I could get an answer.

:lol::lol:

Not what you think.

It is actually the head of one of those sticks that they carry around for fighting off things etc, sort of a club thing ( can't remember the exact name sorry)

I could not crop this out as took too much away from the picture.

Ahhh so you can see what I see then ;)

I can see why it couldn't have been taken out. I'm sure one of the techy types could suggest something but I'm not at 'that level' yet.

It's only Friday, still plenty of time to get snapping if you change your mind. My Week 1&2 where old point and click snaps but I got some good tips to try when I return to the locations later this year.

Hey, I really like this shot. Love how the knife is sharp and in focus whilst the rest of the pic is slightly out of focus.
I am in the same position as you - having been away out of of the country for work, and now with a massive jet lag, I have to think of something quick and take the pic today/tomorrow and post!

I see from the lack of C & C this week that it was cr*p or = oh well never mind:shrug: I found it a hard week , roll on this week ;)

I'm quite liking your week 3 Briony but the right hand side is a little distracting (not just the wotsit at the bottom). A bit of cloning to isolate the rest of the image would work a treat on this I think, but that's something that's beyond my skills.

Thank you,
I caught the biggest rat in a trap last night (been frequenting my shed!!) and was going to post it here as "Chopped" but I thought it would offend so I held back but a brilliant take on the theme

That knife could certainly do some serious chopping and is nice and sharp ...in both senses!

Briony, it's not... I like it... I don't go through the other threads till I've done mine (and I only got it posted this morning). I agree with Darren, and a minor crop on the right hand edge to remove the spots of colour would sort that out.

Aw Thank you ;) I will try harder this week but if somone would like to edit it for me then they are very welcome.

Hi Briony - Week 3 and this is the first time I've dropped in on your thread. :bonk:

Week 1: I love that bottle and agree with the comments of those who were quicker off the mark than me! :)

Week 2: Awww - this is sooooo cute! Despite the song which is going to drive me insane today!!!!!. It's so cute, in fact, that I didn't even notice the lack of feet. Well done for catching that moment - it must be really hard and I know I'd just panic with excitement and just keep pressing buttons.

Week 3: Well done on finding a 'chopped' theme. That shot really shouts 'Africa' to me. Lovely - and well-spotted.

Jean

Hi Briony,
A really interesting shot for week 3 and you’ve certainly captured the feel of the place. Nice focus on the knife and just enough of the person holding it in frame to give it some life.
I agree with the comments about trying some cloning to tidy up the RHS. That club doo-dah thingy is slightly disturbing  and it would benefit from losing the hands and feet too.

Only criticism from me (and it’s not really a criticism) is that it would have been nice to see a new image produced specifically for the theme . . . preferably NOT a dead rat though :gag:
Even if it was just a new technique tried on an old shot like the cloning suggestion.

I can see why you’ve submitted the last 2 shots that you have, but for me the 52 is more about learning and inspiring me to get out and use the camera than about photo sharing. I just find that I get more out of it by trying something different each week. JMO of course and not meant to sound negative. It’s your project and your rules. ;)

Thanks Sarah Lee I know where you are coming from but I was struggling and rather the old chopped fruit veg etc I wanted something different, the same with the "street" thing, but I think I may have that one sorted just off to get a couple of shots now.

Still enjoying and practising though

Glad to hear it you're still enjoying
I'd just thought of some suggestions for you for street and posted them in your "STREETS" thread . . . looks like I was a bit too slow :bonk:

STREET

Very boring, very uninspiring, I went into town and tried to take a picture of a town street and was asked by a policeman what I was doing and to be careful about photographing people :( and kinda put me off so came home :(

I have deleted the pictures, due to absolutely no response whatsoever, so that just makes me think they were total cr*p :( so I am a week behind, waiting for this weeks challenge now to see if that inspires me!

Well done.

I was challenged by a policeman while trying to take a photo so kinda lost my nerve this week, then posted one of my street in the country and got no replies or coments whatsoever so took them off as they must have been bad !!!:( so I am debating wether to carry on with this or not:shrug:

Just saw the above on another thread.

Don't give up due to the assumption that you're rubbish! You're not. I think that "mass comment" time is usually on a Sunday night when people tend to put up their end-of-week shot. I know I tend not to look at other threads until I've put my shot for the week up. That seems to be the case with others too, so immediate comments might not be as forthcoming as you might expect.

Did you decided to give this a go to improve your photography? If so, my advice is to stick at it. I've seen some good shots from you and you're definitely not rubbish!

Have a wander over to another Ian's 52 and read about his hardships this week.

And show us yer shots! :)

Chin up! It won't always be dark at six.

Ian.

Had a bit of a ****** week really lost a good friend of mine at 42 with a heart attack :'( then another good friend moved to Scotland :'( then the episode with the policeman made me run for home.

I will try and get a "shot" of street but it may be late:shake: maybe try and go somewhere at night so no one will see me, bit paranoid about taking shots of people now.:suspect:

That's just a rubish week :(

If it makes you feel any better I had high hopes for this week and was really excited - It's Friday night and so far I've got a picture of a puddle !! (Which incidentally cost me a chat with a policeman !) Well it was outside the nick

Chin up I know it's hard when life conspires against you. I'm sure your Street shots weren't all that bad, I know I'm hyper critical of my stuff when I'm down in the dumps or under pressure. Put them back up and let's see what people think. If you do I promise to post my puddle ;)

O.K folks here are some ****** shots of Streets

1. In the snow

2. Not in the snow

See what I mean :help:

NOW I WANT TO SEE A PUDDLE :lol::lol:

Your chopped pic fits nicely into the theme.

See wasn't that hard to shot a street :D would have like to seen the second shot taken from the same spot as the first. The phone box stands out really well in the first.

I will have a go when the lighting is good.

Thank you

And what exactly is wrong with #1 ? It's exposed perfectly, the snow is white not blue and the phone box is perfectly placed in the image. Beats my puddle ;)

WHERE is your puddle???????????? you promised:)

Two wheelie bins guarding a phone box. I like it!

Maybe crop the house out to draw the attention to it and give it a Dr Who-esque title and you're done.

I would probably also try a B&W conversion and pop out the red phonebox, but some people might hand out cheese for that.

I think you did a great job!

Ian.

I feel for you! I think you were unlucky with the policeman. I assume this was in Oxford - if it happens again maybe you could politely point out that thousands of tourists could be put off from coming if they start hassling toggers!

Don't be put off by the lack of response. I never look at other people's shots until I have completed my own one for the week, and often I can't get it done until the Saturday or Sunday.
