Bridge camera?

I'm thinking of getting a 'bridge' camera as a lead-in to real photography and I want one with a good zoom. I thought I'd found what I wanted in one Fujifilm camera till I read somewhere that the manual controls were not all they might be.

I'm looking at Fujifilm for no better reason than that my daughter has one and I found it easy to use and comfortable to handle.

So now I'm looking at the Finepix HS10 or Finepix S400.

I know that no-one can tell me which camera I should buy buy but if anyone has either of these I'd be glad to know what you think of them! :help:
 
If you are buying it as a lead in to real photography consider a SLR otherwise you may find 6 months in you end up buying one anyhow. You could get a good second hand one to start you off there are lots about. Bridge cameras are ok but can be a bit limited. The fuji ones tend to be pretty popular.

I have a bridge camera, Fuji finepix S5800. Ive had it a few years now and use it aot. It takes some lovely photos and you do have a manual setting where you can play with ISO etc for different situations.

I love my camera but am hoping to get a foot in with photography so looking for a DSLR, Ill still have my trusty Fuji though!

(sorry im not overly technical :D Hope that made sense!)
 
You might be better considering a decent compact with manual controls and RAW like the Canon s95. It produces photo's as good, if not better than a bridge and it will still get used a lot after you get a DSLR.
 
I have an hs 10 and it is great. the manual settings are very user friendly and you have as much control over aperture and shutter speed, white balance, iso and many other choices as you would with a dslr.i admit an slr would have the edge in image quality if you were doing large size prints, but the hs10 is capable of some stunning results if you take time to learn how to use it properly
 
Thanks all for the info. I definitely want a bridge, I already have a reasonable compact which lives in my handbag and that won't change, I'm going for a Fuji because I like the feel of it - that's important to me as I have arthritis in my hands.

Looking at details of the HS10 it says it has an electronic viewfinder - does the viewfinder show the same info as using the screen? One of the things that disappointed me with my Canon compact was that it didn't do that unlike my very old and beloved but sadly broken Kodak easyshare.
