Hi Guys,

im new here, i hope i am posting this in the right section

So i have decided to get my own camera, i don't have much photography experience and have only used digital cameras in the past for family photos

by budget is £150, quite a few bridge cameras come within my budget but as i don't have much experience i wanted to know what's the best camera to get within my budget?

I want to take quite professional looking wedding photography and holiday snaps, i know neither bridge or digital can give results like DSLR cameras but is there anything remotely close to that kind of quality within my budget

thanks
Mari

I think you might struggle to get professional looking wedding pictures within your budget,as you will be using the same sensor whether compact or bridge camera within your budget. Robert has given some great advice about secondhand dslr`s which if you can stretch too will give you results iam sure you will be thrilled with.

Only photographic experience will produce professional looking wedding photos, but you wont do it with a bridge.

thanks for the advice guys, i also need to be able to take HD videos with the camera, and unfortunately i can't stretch my budget for the dslr :shake:

so it has to probably be a bridge or compact digi cam?

are bridges any better than digi cams in terms of photo quality?

Have you thought about a film camera?

By "professional looking" do you mean "very good images" or "a camera I could use and market myself as a professional photographer with"?

A bridge cam is perfectly fine for family snaps and casual shooting. But for a wedding? as a paid photographer: NO. As a guest, just taking pictures for yourself, fine.

Most modern bridge cameras have HD video, and the image quakity is pretty good for the price. But if you want to get more serious about your photography, you'll want to shoot RAW, and process the images - things get pricey when you add in RAW format and extra software. Bridge cameras are very limiting too, usually with max exposure time of 8 seconds and limited aperture between f/2.8 - f/8. Also, you can't change the glass that's on there, you're stuck with whatever it comes with.

The Olympus sp-350 is an amazing camera for the money (£50) second hand from ebay.

It shoots raw files to, lens will rival the best compacts today and generally produces lovely images.

Full manual control but you will have slow raw recording times and the battery life is shockingly bad.

If you're interested I can show sample images that were produced from this camera.

Bridge cameras a compact cameras in general have the same size sensors so one isn't better than the other. However having a 20 x zoom bridge would probably be worse optically than a compact with a smaller zoom.

Right i think i've found something for you. A samsung Nx10 which has the same size sensor as a dslr but in a smaller bridge size body. Price is £159 but it says 'make me an offer' so offer them your £150. It also shoots 1080i video. Hell if you don't hurry up and buy it i will!:)

Update: Bummer its collection only in Cheshire, but you can still look out for others.

sorry i should have clarified, i don't intend on becoming a professional photographer, i mean as a guest at a wedding, i need something that will take sharp good quality shots

That's what the profiessional is there for.. you're there to have a good time and celebrate with the couple

Over budget, but I can recommend the Sony HX9V or HX20V as a good quality everyday camera. The HX10V is closer to budget, it has a shorter zoom and I haven't tried one. You might get a secondhand HX9V very close to your budget.

Almost any camera on the market will take you "sharp good quality shots", in the right conditions:thumbs:.
It's when the going gets tough that you'll struggle. That's where understanding what your geear is capable of comes in.

Just seen this.

Forget it. Save up.

You won't find anything for your budget that ticks all those boxes. Something with HD video will not be giving you the wedding type photo quality.

My suggestion...what kind of phone do you have?!

Have to say I agree with Phil here. If I were you I would try and save some more money, and get yourself something better.

If you buy something that can't do what you want it to do, you will very soon get annoyed with it and give up. You won't have £150 anymore either....
