I'm planning on visiting Brands Hatch either for the BTCC or the truck racing but have never visited before so would welcome any advice on places to shoot from.

Are you able to walk around the whole track or are there only certain spots for spectators?

Thanks,

Brands Hatch BTCC finale is on the GP circuit and the fences around the GP loop are mostly waist height and the spectators can walk all the way around the inside of the circuit.

Trucks is on the Indy loop and there is a lot more fencing. Of course you can shoot through fences but its more awkward.

I'd do the BTCC myself.

There is a cut-out in the fence at Clearways, it gives you a great view up the GP straight. I imagine it gets pretty full on raceday so you'd want to be there early, and don't hog it all to yourself all day!

A another great location is the inside of druids. As Andrewc said, all the fencing is low, and there's lots of options of where to shoot.

Yes, the cut out does get full.... of TV camera, because that is what its for!!

Its usually only one guy, there's always room around him! Shooting through the fencing is just as easy though - use a narrow depth-of-field, get your lens as close as you can to it, limit your focusing (if you can), and you'll never even know there was a fence in the way.

And of course make sure the sun isn't on your side of the fence or you will get shiny fence in your photos still ;-)

Have a look for certain parts of the fences that have been spray painted black, someone found the sun thing annoying and took action at Brands! :P

I usually shoot from the inside of druids. You're about to get some really nice images of them coming down Paddock hill and then on the run up to druids and then also some really neat shots on the exit of druids!

Make sure you keep an eye out for the historic touring cars if you go to the btcc, just as exciting! My dads cousin and his brother are based in Burnham on crouch in Essex and have a team, they race 2 Aston martin DBS v8s and a camaro, last time I went was a few years ago and all 3 cars were blue and had Portflair sponsors but I'm pretty sure the Aston Martin's or at least one of them is white now, ex touring car driver andy rouse drove for them at that point, not sure if he still does though! IIRC the team is/was called 'rouse hall motorsport' although as I say it may have changed! Nothing like standing on the pit wall while a load of cars come hoofing it along the straight!
