Brand new site design!

I'm on quite a fast macbook with a good internet connection and the pictures are taking a while to load which personally, I find frustrating.

Got to agree with the above comment, but some stunning photographs.

What parts took time to load? Gallery images? What?

Looks like it's the images, for the most part.

Assuming you use Firefox (if not, you should download it for website testing anyway ;))... Download these extensions;

Firebug

Yslow

That will let you see exactly what's loaded and how big each file is, plus give you some great tips to speed up loading of the site :)

Firefox grounds my computer to a halt :(

its not too bad loading wise here, granted im at work on a PHAT internet pipe.

otherwise design crit..

1) the rotating images in the header, can you slow down the fade transition at all?
2) dont like the way the shop loads over the top of the web page. maybe load it to a new window? or see if it can be integrated/skinned better?
3) same with encyclopedia, loads in the same window and you lose your page.
4) same with mail list.

otherwise not bad :)

The shop is a separate thing and to integrate would cost too much. The encyclopaedia and mailing list are separate websites linked to. I will probably do open in new window now you mention it!

You can reduce the size of your files with Easy Thumbnails without losing quality.

Look here to see the results of using Easy Thumbnails:

Original Photo:

Compressed photo:

.

the thumbnails are the same image full size so act as a preloader.

Not quite sure what you mean by that as they are exactly the same image full size but one is over 1Mb and the compressed one is 163kb so would load much quicker.

i think what he means is that the gallery software he uses just resizes the full size image for the thumbnails so that it is cached for when you click onto it?

edit - looking at the source code thats what it seems to do

It loaded in reasonable time for me Will, and the content is excellent. I don't think I've seen any of your work before (I've obviously been looking in the wrong forums!) so it was a treat to browse and I'll return for another look soon. The wildllife section is a winner, and my favourite the puffins in the raindrops - beautifully captured.

Thanks for your kind words!
The other sections are debatable whether or not they should be there yes, as I only focus on my wildlife work.

3 photos next to each other. 3 different watermarks. then followed by images with no watermark. Need continuity one way or the other, personally I would say no watermarks but thats another conversation.

Some lovely work, but self edit. Too many of the same shoot for my liking.

Sorry to be hard, but you have some amazing work, just too much of what looks to be the same shoot

Thanks that's good advice. I'm in the process of changing the watermarks but school is getting in the way!

As for the same shoots; do you mean the two red squirrels on the log? If so, that's the only one? I'll remove one of the pair :)

I find all the images painfully slow on 6-8 meg connection and it doesn't seem to matter if I use chrome, firefox or safari. Having to wait for images to load is not a good experience I know good things come to those who wait but patience is a virtue I've never quite mastered!

Some great shots, but a bit more variety of content is required. This was mentioned before, it looks like you've done a shoot with puffins, a shoot with a red squirrel and shoot with some sheep.

I like the simple clean layout and the grey is good. Your fonts are clear and easy on the eyes. ON a whole, I like it, just wish that first load was quicker.

The designer is now working on speeding up the site.

I know the variety of species isn't huge, but I'm at school so am not a full time photographer and it's difficult to always take something new. Do you think I should only put one of each species up?
