Hi all

Apparently Braemar in Aberdeenshire is consistently one of the coldest places in the UK! .... Other than that, does anyone have any suggestions or comments regarding the area? .... good pubs would be a start :D ..... I will be camping there for a week around Christmas time! any suggestions of what to see and do? ...... photographically preferred but anything appreciated :)

CAMPING?!!!! :cuckoo: :D

Winter drawers on.

Last year Braemar was a nightmare at Christmas time weather wise.

The roads in and out are often closed so as long as you can physically get out and about then it's a lovely (albeit small) village and obviously plenty of landscapes around.

Undiscovered Scotland..........

I hope it is winterised.......:D

You can't camp in a motorhome! :D

Still, good luck. I seen the roads up there last Winter and it was madness. One of the telecom sites I went to up there had snow so deep you drove over the farm gate in the ATV and that was at the bottom of the hill.

That's cheating. I thought you meant a tent.

Nah! .... I'm not that tough ;)

 Oh! well, should be a bit of an adventure :D

Did you know that Braemar holds the record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in the UK. -27.2 C on the 10th January 1982.

Just thought you might like to know that. :naughty: :D

I was camping there in July, very nice it was too - except the midges. You can camp anywhere in the braemar estate, which is beautiful. I would post some pics but I don't have access to them right now. Braemar is pretty poor for pubs actually, I was looking for some great old-man pubs but couldn't find anywhere with decent ale.

....it's a beautiful part of the world though, and well worth going to.

Is that with, or without windchill factor?

Forgot to say, there's agreat chippy there! IF you can get in for all the bikers! (Not when it's snowing though)
We stayed at the Spittal of Glenshee, Best breakfast in the world!

Yep, tents are for young people.................

That a good question.

The temperature on the day was taken on an official Met Office approved instrument housed inside a Stevenson screen and it was calm with very clear starry skies at the time. That allowed a lot of heat loss and caused a "blob" of cold air to descend on that location, thus created that exceptionally low temperature.
At the same night, Newport in Wales recorded -26.5 C, the coldest temperatures for the Southern half of the UK, again, conditions were calm and clear at the time.

That came about after a fortnight-long cold snowy snap. I dread to think what it would feel like if a strong wind was blowing at the time!

Ballatar is just up the road from Braemar and its a lovely wee place - busier and with a better selection of pubs by the looks of things.

Braemar is a lovely area, lots to photograph in the area and also further down lower deeside.

the roads may not be the best up there over winter, but hopefully they will be clear enough for you.

Linn of Dee (just be careful and dont get too close to the edge as it will be slippy in winter), a couple miles up the road there is a place called the "Linn of Quoich" another set of waterfalls and some great forests to walk through.

Also just out of Braemar is "The Falls of Garbh Allt" which is in the Ballochbuie Forest on the royal estate, lovely waterfalls a couple miles in and a great walk through the silent forest.

Further down the road there is a place past Ballater called "Burn O' Vat" again another set of waterfalls (you can now guess i like my waterfalls), there is also a Loch across the road which will be great in winter.

I like my Waterfalls but there is plenty of hills to photograph and climb, and many forests etc to explore.
If you need any more information let me know, or if you want details on some of these locations let me know and i will get some online maps for you.
You have probably already checked, but have a look at Flickr Under "Braemar or Deeside"

I just hope the weather isn't too bad for you and take care.

Cheers.

Chris.

Wow! Thanks Chris some excellent suggestions  I'll certainly look into those
