I have the opportunity to photograph a boxing event, nothing serious but a local club. Mums and dads will probably want to see images of their "little johnny". They all use their phones at present so I am up against it.

I am no where near a sports photographer but would like to do my best, obviously.

Room is indoor with a low dark ceiling and a couple of fluorescent lights.

Looking through my collection of old equipment I think that my best attempt would be with

D4 (selected for FPS)
24-70mm 2.8 zoom
SB80 flash

I have other stuff available but use that as a starting point. Suggestion please.

I would appreciate any comments or advice that you are able to provide, on positioning, angles or whatever.

My first thought, if someone fired a flash as opponent was punching me, I might punch the photographer. Think, only THINK, need to be high iso settings. Only been at to boxing events, no flashes used by photographers, maybe different at kids/ youth boxing.
Just my tuppence worth.
 
flash is a no no in boxing,Be in manual, use the 24-70mm 2.8 at 2.8 , shutter speed at least 800 and iso to suit
 
As above.. ditch the flash :) 24.70 2.8 ..as for the shutter.. You may have to max your ISO and see what shutter is left for a decent exposure

You need to position yourself in a nuteral corner and shoot between the middle and bottom rope... mostly try for top half of body shots..

take plenty of water/drinks as you wont be able to go buy anyhting as you will miss a bout

boxing photogrpahy can be hard on the back.. its too low to stand and too high to sit....
 
also keep lens hood on camera, which helps to protect from flying sweat and blood.Have something to clean front of lens. Hopefully here won't be any blood as its youngsters.This photo was 24mm ,ss640 and iso 4000

That's just the kind of shot I am looking for, anyone would be proud of that.
And its unlikely that an image like that would have been captured by a parent with a phone.
I never even considered flying sweat, blood, the toll on the body or refreshments, so thanks for that Tony.

Elbow pads/thick longsleeve top also, as leaning on the canvas hurts after about 1 round.

And lots of memory cards. If you think you can react in time to a punch being thrown, you are wrong. Just have to keep shooting. Delete later.

Burt mode is your friend but dont go mad... I remember asking one guy near me if he was making a film.. :)
 
What a great project, something I have never done, but I'd like to see some of your results.

The more I look at the image Allan the better it gets, the ref there perfectly poised looking at the same punch as we are, unconcerned, just another day at the office.

Fantastic.

I take back what I said previously, I don't think I could ever take a shot that good. You must have been very happy when scrolling through that batch of images and seeing that one!
 
Love this pic, the refs lovely white shirt. Didn't last long.Blood and sweat everywhere.Fight stopped in next round as fighter could not see.

Would it be best to shoot RAW or JPEG for the greater burst capacity?

I never shoot raw for sports... you would need mega cards haha. your gonna take a lot of shots and doubt you want to do that much work on each shot....

Ahh here, I both understand the needed approach, but also hate it.

And lol at that comment! :-D
