Yes
I have just taken my first ever shots at a local amatuer boxing match, and what a massive learing curve it was too.
As i had been warned by Kippax and others, the lighting was dreadful and i had to push the iso up to 10000 at times. I will post a few of the better shots later tonight.

I shot the event with a 5dmk3 and a 35mm 1.4, and i found on occasions i could have done with a little more length, can anyone suggest a lens that will perform in low light, and is quick and sharp.
As i have spent quite a few quid recently i would like to keep my budget to around £400. Zoom or prime not fussed as long as it is up to the job.

regards
Steve

what about the sigma 50mm? heard good things or the canon one is fairly good.
for boxing you should be okay with f/2.8 if you can get something versatile and have more reach when you need it.
any shots to share? i'm particularly interested in boxing shots

Matt, will try to post some tonight. Are you talking F 1.4'S?

Yes. Both have a 1.4 option. There is a 1.8 zoom now but it doesn't have much reach

Cheers Matt, might explore the 50mm 1.4. Pictures added in the photo section (go steady on me, lol)

if you ahve a 50m prime and the action comes right in front of you at the ropes then you wont be wide enough.. you might ant to find a sigma 24-70 f2.8 ?

Thanks Kipax, will a 24-105 f4IS cut it at ring side or is the Sigma a better option with the F2.8??

I wouldnt touch the 24-105 with a barge pole for boxing... f4 is useless to you in a dark room

Tony. That will do for me. Thanks.

Hey..just one mans opinion :) Someone could come along and tell you they shoot great boxing wiht the lens :)

I am shooting boxing at the winter gardens in blackpool on saturday 29th.. I expect the lighting to be great..Aa couple of weeks I have boxing at colne municiple hall where the lights are less great.... your lens choice really is about the light as much as the sport and as you have found out boxing can be in dark halls for local events.. if your wide open at f4 then and too dark then your stuck..

Tony, the events I will be attending will definitely be NOT like the winter gardens. Most will be converted "WMC for the night", did one last week and dependant where the boxers were in the ring meant ISO anything from 3200 - 12800. Your advice is much appreciated and also will take it on board. Tried the flicking of the focus points you mentioned and its something I need to nail. looking at my shots, where I thought I had focused clearly shows I was nt. Good job I not the one throwing the punches. lol

If you keep focus center point then you dont get two boxers in the frame let alone focus... unless your really wide angle and getting lots of empty space...The boxers tend to circle the ring and I set focus on the oncoming boxer.. shouldnt be flipping every couple of seconds... guess its just summat to get used to.. this si why I like a prime... got enough to do without using zoom as well :)

I set my focus points to NINE any more and you get lost.. easier to flip left right... not great with a 1dx though when you can hardly see the focus point in dark :(

Cheers Tony, think that's the problem I had with the 5dmk3, new body for me, so need to get accustomed to its functions and capabilities, differs from my 7d in operation and ability.
