Took a few (hundred) pictures at a club show tonight, and whilst I'm happy with the results, I struggled with low light quite a bit. ISO was right up at 6400, and even then, the fastest shutter speed I could effectively use was 1/80th at f5.6, as expected the pictures are really noisy.

Now, for the most part, a bit of noise can look quite good, as can a bit of blur where the shutter speed was too slow to catch a movement, but does anyone have any advice/experience of photographing boxing and coming away with really sharp pics?

What was in the shot? You really need to chase the light at an event like that, so don't try to get too much in shot - but close in on the action, and watch the light. That shutter speed is way too slow to freeze action. What lens were you using at f5.6?

You really need f2.8 lens for this type of sports. If ring side 24-70 is ideal and is what I use. It also maybe possible for you to use flash so worth asking.

As Graham says, I'd want some thing faster than f/5.6 glass to shoot an indoor boxing event, as they tend to be very dark. Was that the maximum aperture, or did you choose 5.6?

You will never be able to do Boxing photography at a shutter speed of 80th sec.You need minimum 320th 400th sec.Your Nikon D90 can do it but you need a lot faster lens than f5.6.Buy a 35mm f1.8 dx lens and you will be able to get shots like this.

Nikon D7000 f3.2 500th sec 6400 ISO. Flash not allowed. The promoters expect cameras that are good enough not to use flash now.

Nice shot Kestral.

I had the same problem yesterday at an indoor martial arts event , using a D90 a 50mm 1.8 with iso set high enough to achieve a decent shutter speed. I still struggled to freeze the action as i wanted , my life would have been easier with a flash but i had to make do. I set the shutter to high drive and managed to get one shot per 10 which was ok and usable. Still , lessons learnt .
