I need some good quality lights, with a high output (Im so untecchy with my terminology so please forgive me if this is the wrong word!) and the research I have done tells me that Bowen's 500w lights (non-pro) are quite good and can pick up some good deals because the pro version is now available.

Would you agree?

Other than eBay (which, out of interest, how much do you think a twin set with softbox, umbrella, stands, leads and case should be going for 2nd hand?)

Does anyone know of anywhere that's selling them at a good price? Best I've found is £645+vat at Richard Frankfurt http://www.richardfrankfurt.co.uk/index.php?productID=2732 but tbh, I'd prefer not to spend that much.

I use the Bowens 500 and 750 and I think they are great, consistent output, built well, colour consistency from the output and the best for me is the use of the Travelpaks for on location work . The best thing is to watch ebay as they are regularily on there, I would expect the set you are looking for is worth about £600-650 inc VAT.
 
Calumet advertise on ebay, I have found on the 'make offer' button if I offer 18 - 20% less than the buy it now price it gets accepted, of course that's in my experience.

Nothing at all wrong with Bowens, but also check Elinchrom and Lencarta. Lencarta are good value, as they only sell direct.

Do you need loads of power? 300ws to 600ws is only one stop. What about softboxes etc?

I have 5 x bowens 500 heads and 1 x bowens 750 head, all Ive needed for studio work, OK maybe I have more heads than I really need, but I like toys :) 2 is great, but if you want to wash out a background for the 'oh so popular white look' you need a minimum of 3.
