The hunt for the 'right for me' studio kit continues... I'm considering the Lencarta ElitePro300 and 600 with GN of 49(162) and 70(232) m(ft) if I've converted correctly Garry, but the 600s are out of stock for a period.

So, in the frame also are the Bowens Gemini 200 and 400, the Gemini R 250 and 500. In a four head configuration with 2 heads on the BG a key and a fill. Ok, the GN for each are 54(178) and 76(251), 60(198) and 85(280) respecively m(ft), all of which just about meet my needs from an output point of view (assuming the 200 only generally for fill, although I'm leaning towards the 400 or 500w/s as I could do with the extra distance to subject and possibly higher than I'd like ambient light levels (nursery/playgroup settings). The possible power pack addition for battery use is a nice feature also, for the future.

Eventually to my pondering question... How do the 'entry level' Bowens ranges stand up to reasonably prolonged studio use? Anyone with actual experience of these ranges, rather than the Pro range? I'm eager to know as much as I can before spending what is a reasonable sum of money for me.

Thanks

All Bowens take some killing .... if you remotely look after them

I've a set here that must be 20 years old and still do the job

Thank you Simon... I've all but picked up the phone and ordered the 500R set  (accessories deal too until the end of Jan... that might swing it with the Mrs ;), do Bowens make ladies shoes? :bat:)

I was just playing with some at a friend's place the other day that are also at least 20 years old and still going strong, although he is considering selling them now to fund some SB-900s.

Thanks - from looking at the new R spec they do look rather good value.

Can anyone comment on the Pocket Wizard vs Bowens Pulsar? As the R can now take the pulsar card and I 'think' it can be used with various transmitters, including PW.

v8bubble, if you can buy from onestop digital, depending on what options you're getting, the pocketwizards may be the better option, onestop /digitalrev do pocketwizards for £130 each or 2 for £240, and the pw card is £110. Bowens triggers are £150 each, but the bowens card is £70...
Seem to remember the pulsar system having a lower sync speed too?

Ok, I've reserved the stock until Friday, just need to pass it with the boss ;) I had agreed a max of £1500 with her :bat:

OHHHHHH I am looking forward to your results when you get your new kit already

You big spender you ! ..... that's it throw caution to the wind !

look forward to seeing the results

Get the pocket wizards if you can, ive just bought them and they are amazing. I had the pulsars before and they were very tempremental, i had to fiddle with the wire to make them work. I even changed them for new ones and the same thing happened! Not good when you'e got young children in for a photoshoot!!!!
