Got 4 Bowens heads 2 x 500's 2 x 200 and when using them they don't seem to fire off the master flash but if i switch the master round then they work or try a different head as the master, the main trigger is firing the main flash ok

Do any of them fire?

Is there a button/switch to turn off the remote sensor?

Right it seems to only do it when i drop the flash power to low on the main flash head, crank it up and it makes a bleep and then fires all of them ?

That would suggest that the light detectors are not sensitive enough. Your only choice would be extra receivers!

So they talk to each other by light/IR and not wireless then ? Do i need some cheap triggers then. Any you suggest ?

Thanks for the help

They don't talk to each other at all. They have a light detector on them and fire due to any sharp flash of light! So one going off sets all of them off (or should do).

RF602 transmitter and 4 receivers can cost about £80.

EDIT: £74.99... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RF-602-Nikon-...uipment_RL&hash=item255df15629#ht_4440wt_1177

You don't need extra radio receivers unless other people are also firing flashes in the same room.

Flash sensors work when they detect a substantial and sudden increase in light, in other words when they see a flash.

Generally, this works well but there are several things that can stop it working.
1. As you've already discovered, a very low powered flash isn't always enough.
2. The increase in light needs to be substantial, and if there is either bright sunlight or the light from a modelling lamp falling on the sensor, the power of the flash may not be enough. In this situation you may need to block sunlight or turn off a modelling lamp that's shining on it.
3. You don't say which model of Bowens 500 you have. Where is the sensor on this one? Sometimes, sensors are in daft places. The best place is the top of the flash head, where it will 'see' the flash from pretty well any direction but sometimes they are on the back or the side and don't 'see' the flash unless it can reflect off of a nearby wall or similar.
The main light (the one with the radio trigger fitted to it) should always be fitted with a broad light source such as an umbrella or softbox, which will spread the light around the room and hopefully catch the sensors on the other flash heads. If the main light is fitted with a narrow light shaper instead, such as a honeycomb or a snoot, it may not set off the other lights.

Hi Gary and thanks for the information, the model is the Bowens GM500 & GM200

When attached to the 500's i need it on high to trigger the others but for some reason on the 200's the others will fire off it no problem on low power. Off to the studio in bit to have another play.

4 flash heads eh. Where do you live ? BLACKPOOL

Several things will affect flash slave cells, bright ambiant lighting may overpower the flash, obviously a low powered or "weak" flash may not be a big enough difference for them to detect. Moving the main flash further back may let the light hit the other sensors better (depends on placement) turning down the modeling lamps may also help to lower the general light level.

Well going to have to get some triggers as had a paid shoot last night with a client and mid flow it started to miss-behave and cant have that. I did mess about with different setting but its a bit hit and miss.
