Yes
So for the softest light is it best to have my flashgun on the floor pointing up to the ceiling so it spreads out lots then bounces onto the subject or is it best to have it up higher close to the ceiling so it doesn't lose too much power?

Depends on the power of you gun & the distances involved

If you draw a picture of the angles of light from the gun to the subject via the ceiling on a piece of paper, you will find that unless anything other than a flat surface is involved, it makes little difference

Thanks guys,

In the end for christmas morning I put my flashgun up near the ceiling mainly though so my daughter didn't try to eat it than anything else

Joe, did you (have you) tried two lights in opposite corners bounced off the ceiling and shooting at 45* angles to them? Works great for this kinda thing.
