Yes
I rang my local Jessops this morning to see if they had a Canon G9 in stock. They did, but were quoting £350 against Warehouse Express's £320. The young girl I spoke told me they don't price match with the internet - only dealers within a 20 mile radius. Not remotely encouraging, so I resolved to order from WE on Monday.

However, being in the town centre shopping later this morning, I decided to pop into the shop anyway, where I spoke to the assistant manager. With only mild blagging from me I eventually came away with the camera, a spare battery and mini Lowepro case for £324.:)

If that wasn't enough, I was given vouchers for 300 free 7x5 prints.

Jessops get a bad press from people from time to time (including me) so it's only fair to publish the good results too.

nice to see that Jessops can bend to meet internet prices. If you have to haggle a little ( no harm in that )

congrats on your purchase CT

I was in my local Jessops this morning. I have been thinking of getting a Nikon Speedlite SB800. Seen it on the internet for around £239. Jessops wanted £329!

To be fair, I think the girl I spoke to on the phone gave me the stock answer " We don't price match" as that's obviously the policy. That doesn't mean they're not open to a bit of negotiation though, so it's worth having a chat at least. :)

I partly the problem with jessops is the variety of people you have proper sales people who know that a sale for £30 less is better than no sale at all then you have just the generic shop workers who either dont have the authority or ingenuity to make the sale.

Nice one CT. I'd be interested to hear your views on the G9 as I've been thinking about one for a 'pocket' camera - they can shoot in Raw can't they?

For the bog standard sales assistants in Jessops, its pretty difficult to give that much discount.
We're completely up for giving discount if the customer is willing to buy something with the camera (i.e. card/case/warranty)
But if they're not, then we don't have the proper authority to give discount like the manager does.
The manager can give as much discount as they want because they get in trouble for it.

Jessops do get a lot of bad reviews simply because they have high prices and some of their staff are incompetent.
In our store we have 7 people working there at different times within the week. One of them is a part time wedding tog, and me and another girl are big photography fans (shes nikon, i'm canon) and we both know our stuff (well, most of the time :D).
1 guy is completely incompetent and the only reason he has the job is because he needed a job. ANY job.
1 guy has worked there for 2 years, and while he isn't interested in photography, he does know about cameras, their features, and what is necessary to know to be able to give the customer the required information they desire, since hes picked that up while hes been working there.
Same goes with the manager, but hes been working there a lot longer. He has a 400d.
Other guy works in the lab, and he knows his stuff too, but since he works in the lab, he rarely sells stuff.

Point of this post, and any post I have made in the past and will make in the future regarding Jessops, is to defend my position. People simply lump all jessops staff into the same category - incompetent, ignorant, arrogant, pompous, acne-ridden saturday staff.
I find it insulting, especially when people come into the shop asking to speak to someone who actually knows stuff about cameras, and so I proceed to give them layer upon layer of overwhelming information about all kinds of cameras and all kinds of techniques, features, functions, settings, equipment, accessories, and then they wish they hadn't come in and been so rude to the young guy with long blonde hair and a few spots.

Edit: Woops, got a bit carried away there :p

Nice one on the camera, its my favourite 'compact' (its a chunky b****r isn't it :p).
The sales person must have been feeling very generous, and since its getting on in the week, they mustn't have used all of their discount up. Congrats. Its a huge discount!

I'll post some thoughts when I've used it in mild anger.:)

Yes they shoot RAW and they actually output bigger jpeg files than the 40D - around 34 mb! There's lots to like about it though - the ISO settings on a dial on the top plate and a mode dial the same as a DSLR with all the modes you can thing of, including Manual.

At the end of the day it's still a small sensor and noise will be the issue with higher ISOs but if you can keep the ISO low it's capable of stunning results. You really need to spend some time with it to get to grips with all it offers - it's a complicated camera!

Have a look at some of the sample images on Page 21 of this review Colin.

"bouguet" is that like a long daffodil sandwich?

Nah, it`s a plastic container you keep the water in when you wash the car...

I got a free Manfrotto monopod from Jessops due to their dire stock management and online reservation system....not that I was complaining ;)

I partly the problem with jessops is the variety of people you have proper sales people who know that a sale for £30 less is better than no sale at all

that's exactly the right approach, any sale is good as long as there is a profit in it, if the customer buys something at a slight discount they leave the shop feeling good about it which will make them return, a customer who leaves annoyed is very unlikely to return.

In the 80s I has a stall on Cambridge market selling shoes, if anyone asked for a discount I would give them one, maybe only a pound or two but I always saw them again, one day this kid of about 13 wanted some shoes but he was £3 short, I said, you can have them just bring me the rest next week.

next week came, at 9am he walked up with £3, I was that impressed I told him he could keep it for his honesty, later that afternoon his mother walked up to the stall and thanked me, that family were good costomers until I finished in 1990.

Good customer service is worth 1000 adverts in the paper

I have to give another vote of praise to Jessops after a purchase yesterday. Had originally popped into Digital Depot in Stevenage to get a wide angle lens and had decided on the Canon 10-22mm, but after a good chat with the sale assistant and manager they were not happy to price match Jessops even though they offer a price match service. So having got back home at lunch time, ordered lens online for shop pick up and by 3pm was the owner of said lens. Jessops were the cheapest I could find and the order online to pick up instore service worked well, they even sent me a text message to say the lens was ready.

I'm looking to get a G9 soon actually, want to be able to have all of the features of my 40D in my pocket.

Gonna import from HK, you can get them for under £300.

The G9 is only £299 at Argos!
I got mine from eGear for £265 or thereabouts

Best price I see from Hong Kong is £276 from Onestop-Digital (with a no- Vat guarantee) or £255 from Digital-Rev on eBay (without the no-Vat guarantee, so possibly as dear as the UK). I doubt Canon would support the warranty in the UK so it means shipping back to Hong Kong in the event of a problem. Personally, I'd go with the best UK price from a recognised retailer, with appropriate cash backs..

Actually, I saw the e.gear price, but was a bit wary not knowing anything about them, but it seems they're OK.

In the end I actually paid £299.99 for the camera, £14 for the case which should have been £22, and £10 for the spare battery which should have been £20, so still a pretty good deal, and I'm happy to support specialist camera shops if their prices are halfway decent. Normally I'm happy to take the middle road and go with Warehouse Express, as I've had good service from them and any problems sorted quickly and without hassle.

i tried getting a discount with three sales staff and they would not budge.
wanted a 400d with kit lens and a sigma 70-300 lens.
said head office would not let them discount because it's all done on computer and no way to get round it.
feel cheated now!!!

If you want the most discount possible, go in early on a monday morning when they have plenty of discount to play with.
As the week draws to a close, the managers are trying to keep discounts to a minimum because if they're discount is too high they get a rollicking from head office (who, by the way, usually don't know a thing about selling stuff. they just sit in the offices and tell us that we shouldn't discount).

You'll be pleased to know that Warehouse Express (according to my manager and assistant manager) is owned by Jessops. I'm not sure if its true, but if it is, its pretty funny considering people rant and rave about warehouse express and then bitch and moan about jessops.

Well seeing as I had the such a hard time trying to get something from Warehouse I can only bitch and moan about them! Phone manner is a job and not telling the customer the whole story! I went else where in the end.....

First I've heard of that! I know Jessops have various online alter-egos, but WE is not one of them.

I thought Tecno and Cameras2u were part of the Jessops group, not WE.

yeah i phoned jessops in sheffield and they claimed that they only price match retailers within a 20mile radius, although when i went into the shop with a magazine ad from Mifsuds they accepted the price match! :D
