I regard myself as a geek and don't usually have a problem with IT related matters but I want to find out if there's an easier way of moving the itunes directory.

Basically I bought my girlfriend an ipod for Xmas as she kept going on about wanting one.

All my music is located on a second internal hard drive on my pc. I didn't move any of it and got itunes to reference the music from that directory.

I've now realised that it won't take long for the second hard drive to fill up once I load all of our music onto it so bought a Sata/USB docking station and a 500gb SATA drive.

I've now moved all the music I already had onto the external docked drive but how can I get itunes to reference that drive and not the internal drive for the music.

Do I have to uninstall itunes and then start all over again or is there an easier way to change the directory location path within the itunes database?

I do agree with you about itunes, I got my iPod 3 months ago after resisting for years. The iPod is great but iTunes drives me a mad, mainly because the controls are quite different from media player and it is taking a long time to learn.

I only found out recently that iTunes was copying all my music into a new folder structure - arghhhh.

I can not help with your problem though as I have stuck to the defaults.

Maybe not the best way, but can you not delete all the items in itunes and re-import them again?

I'm not an i-tunes user at all, but i recently had to do this for the bro-in-law, as i-tunes had added the same music 3 times after music had been moved around. There's a database file in the i-tunes folder. i just deleted it and rescanned, hey presto. If the music is on an external drive you need to make sure the option to 'store copy of music in i-tunes folder' is unchecked otherwise it will try to copy everything back onto your local drive

i believe you can also point i tunes to specific folders.

i know there are plenty WM haters out there, but the most recent version coupled with win7 is really impressive. especially when it comes to album art, song titles and the general arranging of music and customising libraries.

Add an album, re-arrange, or sort out a couple of albums with dodgy song titles and WM instantly updates the library.

Couple the above with Mp3tag and you can easily have a well sorted and organised music collection.

quickest and easiest way would be to delete the library and re import.. wont take much time at all.

or you could edit the XML file that holds the library info..

personally i dont see the issue with itunes, apart from the stupid bonjour service it ships with i think it does its job pretty well for an apple app on windows..

You are able to just pick up the iTunes folder and deposit it where you wish and then point the application to the new location in preferences.

...I think iTunes is pretty good - certainly if use scripts on a Mac (no idea on Windows) - Dougs scripts gives loads of extra functionality. I guess it is the same as everything else, don't panic when you get something new. Its new, give it a little while to bed down and you'll be fine.

use anapod explorer instead

removes all the need for iTunes and allows you to use your ipod as an external disc

You can also use Floola or YamiPod which are better because they are portable so you can copy it onto your iPod and run it straight off there.

if you open itunes

then the edit tab
then preferences
then advanced
then you can change the source folder where your music is kept

hope this helps

Thanks everyone. In the end I deleted the database and re-imported the existing musci from the new folder.

Manually sync your iPod for one thing and then go into FILE when clicked on your music library and then SHOW DUPLICATES - will help you know what's been duplicated.

pretty much what has been said is what you need to do.
delete files and reimport the whole library again, annoying but one of the draw backs im afraid.
