Hi guys,

I have my first Boudoir shoots to do but being a novice with lighting etc i need some advice :)

Gear
Canon 400D
50mm 1.8
YONGNUO Speedlite YN460 ii & Wireless Triggers
101cm Shoot Through Softbox Umbrella White/Black

Are their any other lighting units or equipment i can get that are relativity cheap.



Also i'm thinking of setting up a home studio but again want to try and get this done on the cheap etc. Ill try and get dimensions of the room asap.

For the studio i plan to use it for.

- Portraits / Family
- Baby
- Product
- Boudoir / Glamour

You'll struggle to do this with hotshoe flashes. It can be done, but you'll need to make up for the severe limitations with your equipment with skill and knowledge, and even then it won't be easy.

Boudoir photography basically involves creating controlled shadows, and the primary tool of choice for this is a strip softbox with a honeycomb fitted to it. Now, even if a hotshoe flashgun had enough power for this (and it doesn't) it wouldn't spread the light over the size of area required, and there would be an enormous amount of trial and error involved because there is no modelling lamp. You could use 3 hotshoe flashes on an adapter, to produced more power and, more importantly, to spread the light better in the softbox, but this would cost a lot more than buying studio flash and would still be a compromise.

Family portraits are easier, a key light with a softbox and a fill light with an umbrella will do the job for most people, most of the time, extra lighting will be needed for the background if you want lit backgrounds.

Product photography uses the same basic equipment but products such as product shooting tables and boom arms are very useful too.
 
Thanks for the info Garry! If I was to get a full light setup are there any that you can recommend again on a budget & boom arms looks handy :)
 
Not much I can add that Garry hasn't already covered.

The difference between Hot Shoe flash and Studio Strobes is miles apart in terms of power and control, even a basic 200watt head pumps out more power and recycles a lot faster then the Hot Shoe Variant which will always be trying to catch up with you in basic terms and then the out put can be varied with the hot shoe from one fire to the next.

Like Garry has put, the right kit for the job makes the job easier, and the out put better.

If you want to talk seriously he can help you no end.

That fair as i only have my strobe at the moment ill have to make do and just make sure the room is well lit at the time :P

if i ditched the hot shoe for a half decent Studio Strobes - Softbox Strip - Beauty dish?? - Boom arm etc

I have a fairly basic Lencarta set up, using a pair of 300W heads, one softbox and one shoot through umbrella, plus a reflector.

This set up, in my garage allows me to get fairly decent head & shoulders shots

For anything else you'll need more room, or have to compromise by using wider lenses (which generally fail to flatter). I have used this set up to shoot at a friends house, and in the garden on a sunny day (camera based flash units just don't have the power to cope with bright sunlight).

The better the lights (and modifiers) the better control you'll have on your lighting. In fact, on the shot above, I made a modifier out of silver foil to act as a snoot on the hair camera left.

Sorry about that, the website is basically a recovery job following some major problems with it, a lot of the photos are missing and a lot of the links don't work.

There's nothing that I can personally do about that, but it is being worked on and should continue to improve over the next few days.

You're a long way from my studio, but there is still 1 space left on our studio lighting workshop to be held this Sunday...

Hi, I want to learn boudoir photography in a professional way. I have joined few online courses given by experienced photographer. Do you know if I can find any ebook regarding boudoir photography?
 
You need more than online courses Ken. Book a couple of studio lighting courses to find out how to set up your lighting creatively. The one run by Garry Edwards at Lencarta is great and you should learn a lot.

What equipment do you presently have in the way of camera and lenses as you have not completed your 'camera bag' details? Also where are you located as I may be able to recommend some courses locally to you.

for "boudoir photography" or housewife soft porn you'll need to smear the lens with vasline for that soft focus look and look at late 80's porn mags to get an idea of the lighting and poses involved.

ok I'll admit it the vasline on the lens was a cheap joke but come on boudoir is just a poncy if slightly incorrect term used for a lot of images that display "house wifes" in erotic poses. Technically boudoir photography should illustrate woman being sulky :lol:

any boudior prints should be giclee

In the same way that "sport" is just a term for a load of people competing..?

I don't see what the issue is..? It's just a term to describe a style, or am I missing something ?

Yeah just a term that tries to separate what is basically erotic glamour to something that sounds more "acceptable" I've got nothing against it, just hate the way it's described. Hence my 80s porn comment.
