I'm going to be there for a couple of days (well a night, whole day and then morning) so what are the "not to be missed" locations to go and see while I'm there?

I know of the dockyard and the ship icantrememberthenameof but what else? :)

We went to Boston in April this year, stopped there for about the same amount of time as your going for.

We went on one of the Trolley bus tours, which takes you round all the big sights and also entitled us to a free harbour cruise tour - I think we used "Old Town Trolley Tours". After these we went walked to the State House and walked through the park to the "original" Cheers bar, where we had lunch. We spent the evening in the other Cheers bar, watching the Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees baseball game, not that we really knew what was going on!

The ship your thinking of is probably the USS Constitution which they nicknamed "old iron sides" and go on a lot about how it defeated the British...

Here's my photos on Flickr from Boston: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tomupton/sets/72157624514992738/

Harvard is only a 5-10 minute subway journey away.
Fanieul (sp) hall is right smack bang in the centre and very good for a wander around.
Fenway Park is a must, even if your not a baseball fan. The duck tours are worth a shot as well. Takes you through the harbour and around the town as well.

Cheers bar is worth a visit

pretty much asper ther others, definately have to do the duck tours:

Fenway Park for a bit of baseball was good as well, I didn't have a clue on anything baseball when I went but really enjoyed it!

Thanks for the tips. :)

Did the old town trolly tours do a hop on/hop off service or was it just a single tour? That duck tour sounds good too. :)

They all sound Australian in Boston. Anyone else ever noticed this?

A trolley tour as already mentioned. Great for an overall view. They go on a lot about the British. Don't take it personally - they don't make personal attacks, although there may be some gentle ribbing from the drive/guide if you identify yourself as British [English]. When they mention the Boston Massacre - a whole FIVE people killed - just mention that we kill more people on our motorways every day.

If you take one of these tours you'll see a number of things worth a photo. Either make a note on a map and return later or get off at one of the stops and catch another tour bus following.

Beacon Hill district. Old streets, some cobbled, and gas lamps. Great photo shots.

Observation deck. Top of the Prudential tower building for the view.

The Cheers bar was only used for exterior shots. Nothing was ever filmed inside. Overrated.
