Just a heads up that the new series of Born to be Different will be shown at 9pm on Channel 4 on Thursday 14th and Thursday 21st March 2013.

For those that have not seen this before it is a documantary following six children with disabilities and shownin the ups and downs, highs and lows of life with a disability. It is a frank and honest view of what these kids and thier familes face in day to day life and some very hard decisions that have to be made.

For those wondering why I am posting this - my son William and the rest of the family are followed and have been for the past 13 years. William suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). TSC affects people differently however for Wills it has had some devastating imapcts. He suffers from multiple tumours in his brain, eyes, skin and kidneys. As a result he has Autisum, ADHD, Severe challenging behaviour, global developmental delay and severe uncontrolled epilepsy.

Developmentally he is between 18 months and 3yrs but physically he is 13 so a mixture of puberty and terrible twos is what we are having to deal with!! Having said that he is an adorable cheeky chap who likes the ladies!!!!!!!

Anyway enough of my ramblings:thumbs:

Cheers

Nick

I've never watched it, I must admit.....but you've convinced me easily.
It'll be on the planner

I've watched this series and found it really interesting.

Looking forward to seeing how all the children are growing up and dealing with life.

Thanks for posting Nick

Thanks folks

Good luck!

Thanks Al - his latest chatup line the other day to a young lady was "hello lady, you want boyfriend? You come watch noddy in my room???"

I think he might need to up his game a little

Not heard about this but I shall be watching...
All the best Nick, and the same to William, with what must be a challenging and emotional journey but with many very rewarding times.

To be honest he sounds like he is doing better than I was at 13, I could barely speak to the ladies at that age without freezing on the spot!

Thanks Nick, watched it last time, and will set it on the planner as soon as I can

All the best to you and your family too

Tbh it was fine up until the noddy mention - I will work on some suitable substitutes for him!

Less than an hour to go folks before you see my ugly mug on Channel 4 :D:lol:

I am sat here in a hotel watching this with tears running down my face, all the stories are truly moving.

Oops sorry :-). Thank you for watching.

I am so pleased that William got the funding he needed. I will be watching next week's.

Thanks Dave. It was the fight from hell but so worth it when you see him now :D

just watched it on chase play. F***ing council red tapes.. Glad William got the funding to go to Herts. How is he doing there?

He is a different child, happy, contented and far more confident than he has been for ages. A school that is specifically for epilepsy and understands him is the best thing we have done. Was one of the hardest decisions but so right.

I recorded it on +1. Just sat own to watch it and it's cutting off at the bit where they are talking about William's new school. That's annoying!

I must admit I found it generally inspiring, both from the perspective of the children and the parents. I was close though with the young girl in hospital.

Nick really glad you got William in, it looked like a tortuous decision but everyone can see, as with all the parents in the series, that the decisions are all made with the best interests on the children involved. Glad to see you say it's proved to be a great decision :)

Thanks Al. Yes all decisions are made with lots of deep thought although some do come easier than others!! If you watch next week you will see why it was the right decision.

Thanks to all that have watched it.

Second episode tonight - 9pm Channel 4

Me and the wife have followed the programme from when it first started
Are 6 year old daughter has cerebral palsy and suffers from fits and has severe learning difficulties
Are day to day life is extremely difficult to say the least
We feel a lot of the time are families and friends and work friends don't realise how hard it can be

So this programme gives them the chance to have a small insight into are lives and understand a little more

We think all the families in this programme are truly amazing and do a wonderful job

All the best to you and your family for the future

Mickey

Thank you Mickey, I hope that things iprove for you and your daughter

As you say people don't understand unless they actually see it whcih is one of the reason we said yes all those years ago. We felt that if we could help one person to see that light at the end of the tunnel or to help others more forunate to have a better understanding then it was worth it.

Take care and look after yourself.

This program stuck with me, it's on again tonight and I assume will be on catch up if you missed it. Well worth watching.

Can't believe I missed this thread

We watched it also & was really interesting to see the youngsters & their families again, having first seen it many years ago. (crikey doesn't time fly)

We foster children with additional needs & I've also worked with children with challenging behaviour, so have some insight into your world. Frustration, tears, depression at times, too tired to sleep, but also joy & tears of happiness.

The very best wishes to Nick, Mickey & your families.
