I know it's what a lot of clients want, I know it's "fashionable" but is anyone else just plain bored of seeing the pure white backgrounds so common in portrait photography at the moment? As someone whose hoping to make a living out of photography I'm really interested to hear (and see!) what you think makes an excellent portrait and in your views on white background! I do them myself sometime but they just don't excite me!

Portraits can be anything. A lot of photographers like white 'cos it is clean and easily manipulated in PP. I do whatever the client wants and lots of them, this time of year want outdoor shots.
Just ask the people what they prefere as it will be them that pay. If you have studio props then they can choose, if you do it at there premises then its down to you to set it in the best place they have.
Portraits are not exciting to me at all but you can make a living at it and it pays for the time you have to do what you want shoot.
If your job is your hobby then you have to separate the chores from the fun.

And no I don't like white backgrounds.;)

I did some shots for my ex boss and he wanted the Venture style white backgrounds with lots of colours. Not so easy to do when you are on the cheap with cotton sheets - thank god for NX2 control points. Wouldn`t mind but having said lots of colour they wore shades of grey and brown despite some guidance notes I sent ;-)
Hate white backgrds - persuaded them out to jump in the air in the garden and they ended up being their favourites. Love outdoor shots in places that mean something to them best

I'm really not a fan of the standard studio portrait look - especially pictures of kids. They look too bright and clinical to me. But I guess they must be popular with lots of people if there is a market for them.

pleased it's not just me! I love photographing people but it bores me silly when they say "Ooooh can you do venture style"? To me it feels like it's becoming the fast food of portrait photography! There's so much more amazing portrait work out there!

Yeah saw that Thread Ed, :) definietely nice and creative.... do you think it would work as well with full length shots?

Seems to on the telly, lighting has to be even though. My next purchase will be a large green chroma with train!
