Hi all,

Wasn't sure what forum to put this in, so plumped for this one.

Basically I am trying to decide upon a standard way or variation on a theme way, of putting borders around my photos and adding titles and/or date and/or name to images.

Things like, how big a border around the image? What colour? Should I have a border around the border?

What font to use for the title? Font for name? Size? Position? Pure black or a more faded look?

Should the colour of the border vary for different looking images? Should the border be different if I am going to print for framing or just display on the web? (I suspect yes, but how?)

Id like to decide, then create a PSD file with a landscape oriented border and a portrait one, with fonts etc all set up then whenever Ive done with a photo I can use the pre-made template to frame up my image.

I tried googling for examples for ideas to steal but just got loads of pages on *how* to add borders. I know how to do that already. (ish)

Thanks for any input, web links or anything!

I would have thought the 'Talk Printing and Presentation' forum.

But, I've just looked and it seems to be about mainly printing :(

if you can cope with command line operation of a program then "image-magick" can be really powerfull, but there is a steep learning curve to it.

I use PSP Batch operation on similarly orientated images to do this. As much as I don't really like borders much, I find because I edit on dark grey backgrounds my images don't look how I want when viewed on different sites. At least with my dark border they look the same cross platform, and hopefully makes them less likely to be simply saved and reposted elsewhere.

Come payday I'm going to be purchasing cowasakis script thingy for this very purpose

I think the OP was looking for advice on types of borders, examples etc, not software for adding them.........I could be wrong tho :)

You are correct sir. So far, not a lot coming up..

You'd think there would be guidelines somewhere in this digital age on, for example, what fonts are best to use in certain situations.

putting titles on a photograph : best fonts : x, y and z, italic (or not) etc, etc

IMO, it's all down to personal taste and the picture concerned. I prefer a plain unframed print for most of mine - indeed, many of them are in simple clip frames. Of the few that are in "nicer" frames, only one is actually in a mount and that mount is a cream card/board bevel cut so the white of the board shows. No title.

I don't particularly like borders around pictures or titles in the margin but that's my personal taste! Looking at assorted mounted pictures (that photo and a few paintings), they all seem to have cream mounting boards. On closer inspection, they may well be magnolia but I'm a bloke so waddoino about colours!

If you must go for an ever so slightly off white or black with no text anything else you will regret in 12 months

What do people think of this border?

Text too large? Font ok? Width of border, colour?

Thanks

Looks interesting. Wonder if the ideas can be applied in the digital workspace as it were. Imagine so.
