Guys

Could anyone recommend a good boom lighting stand for my Bowens 500R flash and beauty dish.

Regards

Phil

I have Avenger A475B (same as the Manfrotto 420b), nice boom but maybe not heavy duty enough for what you are looking to use it for. :)

I've got the Lencarta HD version...I reckon you could hang your granny off it.

Cheers guys, I'll have a look into those stands

You get a counter weight with it. I usually fill it with a few tins of beans lol

Our counterweight bag got lost because no one actually used it as a boom for about eight years, just ad a normal stand :) I just ordered one of the solid ones instead - think It's about 5kg, something like that. It's designed for that arm but I fear its a bit OTT in reality :)

I have the 420b and tbh I always worry when I have a Bowens 500 on it and try not to extend it too far as it does put a noticeable flex into the extension section. I tend to put the sand bag on the base and use a solid 5kg weight as the counter balance.

I got quite a good deal on a calumet copy of the manfrotto weight at the last focus on imaging show :)

At maximum extension it's only rated as being able to support 2.0 kg and Bowens heads are not the lightest around. I rarely extend mine past 2/3rds tbh with a studio head. I also use a speedlight bracket with an s fitting so I can still use the boom to put a speedlight where I need it.

You can get beefier booms but I went for the 420 as a mix between portability and stability as I use it on locations.

Guys

With Brians post Im a bit worried that the 420b wouldn't be as stable as I would like, or am I worrying about nothing?

Has anyone had any experience with this one?

That's the heavy duty one that you can hang grandmothers from...
It will cope with literally anything that you're likely to find in the studio.

The downside of it is that it has a long arm that takes up a fair bit of space, it's on wheels so doesn't fold up as small as some others, and is heavy.
The 'standard' one is smaller, lighter and cheaper but still perfectly capable of taking a heavy flash head fitted with a large beauty dish, but doesn't have as much height or reach.

Cheers Garry

I was looking at the smaller one too, will delve into a bit further before I purchase.
