Right guys i need a book that i can have a nice read through (i enjoy reading anyway) just wanna learn more about my camera. Anyway i have narrowed it down too a choice of these 2..

Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D For Dummies

or

Canon EOS 1000D / Rebel XS (Expanded Guides)

and as you can probably tell i am getting a canon eos 1000d

thankyou.

You dont really need either. Read the manual and work your way through it maybe hire out some books from your local library. Ask questions on here!! Welcome by the way!

You say that you want to learn more about your camera - there is no better way than getting out there and experimenting. For what it is worth I bought one of these dummies books when I got my first DSLR. I did not find it particularly useful or insightful. I found that a book such as Understanding Exposure was a much better book. While it didn't tell you specifically about your camers, it helps you to understand what different apertures, ISO's and shutter speeds can achieve. You can use your manual to understand how to change your settings to achieve these things.

Scott Kelby books are also a well considered read for newer photographers - Click here

Picking up one of these books and understanding what you want to achieve and how you can do that is. in my opinion, more useful than an expanded manual.

I hope that helps - Enjoy the read, whatever you decided to get!

Agree with all the above. Should you want to be a bodybuilder ... all the food, tablets or drinks wont get you there. You have to go lift the weights. Same with this. Get out and click away. Every bad shot is called learning :)

Almost every book I now see just repeats the same stuff but in different order. Get to know your camera the way you need. I have several dozen cameras and Im stuffed if I know what 'all' the buttons do :) All I know is that they all take the photos I want.

Take away all the buttons and wizz bang and you are still using a Ansell Adams special ..... infact ... look him up. Now there you will learn something.

End of old person speak :)

Oh yes ..... welcome ... and use this place as your main port of call. There not a bad lot of geeks and odd balls hahahaha

what he said - canon manuals are pretty good

I've pretty much tried everything that's suggested here. My take is:

1. Canon manual is least user friendly for me;
2. I use 500D for Dummies before I go for the manual;
3. Local libraries (in London Borough of Enfield) don't have much to hand.
4. Have a good look through TP tutorials.
5. I love books. For me, owning and reading books on photography and getting out to take photos are not mutually exclusive.
