So I did search for this, so please don't string my up for not looking first :p I'm not new to forums, but relatively new to photography. Got a Nikon D50 from a friend a couple of weeks ago and have taken loads of pics just playing around and working bits out for myself. Now I feel a bit more comfortable with the controls I want to start learning properly. I did ask on another, non photographic related, forum and the results were online based literature, which is fine, but I often like to go out take pics and would like something for reference and to learn as I go! My computer isn't in a well lit room where I could try many things tbh and I prefer books to online tutorials anyway.

So what books could you recommend to not only teach a newbie, but extend beyond that. Or is there a group of books I need to spend more money on?!

I so far have the D50, the 18-55 kit lens, a nikon 55-200 lens and various filters, flashes and tripods, some of which I've been handed down by a family member. I am interested in taking pictures of everything, rather than one specific subject :)

Although its entitled Landscape it has loads of great information regarding exposure, light, histograms and a very clear explanation of back button focusing. Doesn't try to push one brand of camera and isn't taken up with photoshop technique.

Best photography book I have ever read and still refer back to it at times, well worth a tenner

I bought this book for one of the lads that left work and he was very impressed and pleased to get it, would def recommend it :thumbs:

I'm suprised the bible hasn't been recommended yet:

and that's the 3rd revision released just 5 days ago..I read the 2nd edition which was amazing...really excellent book and when I was looking for books when I started it was unanimously recommended to me, after reading you'll have a much much better insight into exposure etc.

Maybe because its not actually that good or at least i didn't think so. Didn't like his style of writing and don't think it was explained that well either

I bought a Jumpstart DVD guide to my camera, a beginers guide only & little about taking better pics. Easier than reading the manual though, & suspect I'll Ebay it when I've watched it a bit more so it wont cost me much. Also can watch it on your Pc (perhaps)
 
Well I just bought a load of books last night to jump into and get reading. I've found so far, taking a pic, looking at it and changing a setting and taking it again has got me a fair way since picking up a dslr but I really wanna understand more. THey should be here hopefully tomorrow if not monday and I can get stuck into them. WHilst I was there... I couldn't help but buy more kit hahaha this hobby is almost as expensive as detailing so far. Certainly more complicated though

+1 to this. A nice easy way to get into photography and is written in a 'simple' style.

For a more detailed look at the D50, I can highly recommend Thom Hogan's Complete Guide.
