Hey guys

What can you recommend for some good reading?

Thanks all

Danny

I'll have a look at my bookshelf when I get home. There's a Roger Hicks book that I definitely wouldn't recommend for a first read but I'm pretty sure I've got some good books there somewhere.

Brilliant Kev thanks mate I appreciate your help :)

I'm just reading Ansel Adams, The Camera and The Negative. I havn't Bought The Print yet, but will do eventually.

Learn from the master tbh! :D Read about half of the former, and it is rather good! I suspect The Negative and The Print are more suited to your request :)

Just looked them up, great recommendations nice one mate :)

I would recommend John Blakemore's Black and White Photography Workshop if you can get hold of it, it's great and covers the basics through to split grade printing and some nice fancy stuff as well, well worth a buy if you want to wet print

Look up "way beyond monochrome" I have it as a kindle book and its fantastic.

The Master Printer's Black & White Handbook by Steve Macleod is a great book for getting into printing and setting up a darkroom. Creative Black & White photography by Les Mclean is also a great book.

The Black and White Handbook by Roger Hicks and Frances Schulz is a very technical and heavy going book. I gave up after a few chapters but probably worth revisiting at a later date once you've mastered the basics (or unless you're a technically minded masochist).

If you can find a copy I can recommend Gene Nocon's Photographic Printing.

It's nearly 25 years old now but his methods have stood the test of time. I bought it when I first got into processing at home and found it invaluable.

Info on the author here Gen Nocon

A good reference book is ILFORD monochrome darkroom practice by Jack Coote. Not the sort of book you would read cover to cover and quite old. Nonetheless an excellent book of 330 odd pages covering all aspects of monochrome developing and printing.

Yeah, thanks - i'll definitely be putting those Ansel Adams books on the (extremely long) list ;)

After looking around for a bit i got my dad (the joys of having a librarian in the family) to reserve a couple of books for me, since he can get them for free and i would have had to pay £5. Those being Photographic Emulsion Technique by T Thorne, which seems to come highly recommended on APUG, and Everyone's Guide to Photography by E.J. Wall, which i went for on a bit of a whim.

The best one i have found is "the darkroom handbook" by michael langford, covers everything from developing black and white, colour and printing both to alternative processes :) its a cracker
