Could someone please recommend me a good book on flash photography that covers portraits using speedlites.

The Speedliter's Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites by Syl Arena is a great resource. There is plenty of info there for non-Canon users too although if you are using Canon cameras & Speedlites you will get more out of it.

Would agree with Paul, have a good read of strobist lighting 101. Lots of info and it costs nothing.
