Hi All

Looking for a bit of advice on photographing my Sister's book launch next month, it will be mainly for our (her) own memories (and both parents and their other halfs will be there so fists may fly LOL) but some of the shots may be used for her website etc (if they are good enough) ... Maggie Philbin & Russel Grant will be there (LOL)

I have the Nikon D5100 with both DX Zooms (18 - 55 & 55 - 200), I don't (yet) have any prime lenses... I'm thinking of taking only one lens, the 18 - 55, your thoughts?

Neither are particularly fast but it should be fairly well lit ... SHOULD BE! Do I use the on board flash or let the camera push the ISO and keep the flash off & remain more descrete ... and are there any "money shots" that I really need to make sure I get?

Any suggestions gratefully recieved.

Cheers

Matt

If I was shooting it I would shoot groups (2s and 3's or whatever) of everyone there on the wide, then pick off people on the long lens, trying to cover everyone attending. Then obviously the two main guests with your sister holding her book, and the guests with any attendees that want there pic done...shoot everything really, couple of wides of the room, get a bit arty!

I would use the on board flash, bounced if possible (depends how high the roof is).

Hope that helps!

So long as you have sufficient light you should be OK! I would def be using a flash, whilst trying to capture as much ambient light as possible.

I would also have a look at a diffuser for the on camera flash, and possibly have a mess with the exposure compensation! Do you have an idea of the size of the room you will be in? You could always have a little practice then.

Hope it goes well...

Thanks Adam, I'm not sure of the room size ... it's at the Education Foundation Learning Lab, Haymarket ... so I think it's a resonable size room, I hope so ... we're expecting 6-0 to 120 people!

I'm out to a posh meal tonight with friends so wil;l give it a trial run, I have some theatrical diffuser gel left over from when I converted wedding bird cages into lamp shades so I could blutac some of that in front of the flash head...

Cheers

Matt

Well it all went well for my sister's book launch ... lots of "Lovie" people ... and here are the first pictures. Any comments and suggestions would be well received (are the skin tones a bit Orange?)

Thanks, In advance, Matt

Oh, and if you run a business then you may find the book Working The Cloud indispensable!
