Book for a beginner.

It's nearly Christmas and I need a book recommendation. Over the last couple of years I've lent my my camera to a mate's son at various events, Goodwood, stock car races etc and he's enthusiastic and seems to have a bit of a talent for it. Earlier this year I gave him my old Canon 2 mp P&S, which is basic but still takes great pics.
I would like to find a beginners book for him, he's only 12 so nothing too technical but something that will explain the theory with photo examples. I still have a copy of Freeman's 35mm Handbook which I was given when I started.
 
The usual response is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson!

It tells you everything you need to know about apertures and the impact on shutter speed etc.
 
Another vote for Understanding Exposure. Very easy to understand and you'll shooting in manual mode in no time!

I think I've mastered exposure myself (just), but is it suitable for a 12 year old?
 
Another vote for understanding exposure.

Helps you grasp all the elements of succesful photography is simple and clear ways without talking in jargon too much.
 
Yet another vote for that book, i've read it several times (i'm slow on the uptake :D) and it's been invaluable to me for my undersatnding of better photography

Totally suitable for a 12 year old, it's written in plain English with plenty of photo's to illustrate the impact of what you're doing.
 
Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson is a good book but I am not sure if it is suitable for a 12yr old plus he doesnt have any SLR equipment. Probably better to give him a camera magazine subscription.
