I need to buy an 18th birthday present for a young keen photographer who is about to go to university studying photography. I would like to buy him a book which might inspire him - either giving expert tips or just a book of beautiful photographs. His own portfolio includes a complete variety of photographs, but he has an amazing sense of humour and likes abstract viewpoints. Any ideas?

This is in the danger zone - I'm a complete 'bookaholic' and the chance of getting me something on photography that either I had not got or wanted would be difficult.
But............. there is a book by I think Michael Freeman on composition which I think is brilliant. Sorry to be so vague - its in my car at the mo and the other half is out in it. I bet someone will come back here and tell you the title.
Good luck!:)

Yep - that link is the book I was on about. Readble and informative and something to dip in and out of often.

Lots of contemporary options, but if it's basic nuts and bolts (which I suspect it will be to start with) the Ansel Adams guides to photography books are a must as is the 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson.

could go for one of the books from Ephrams, Waite, Cornish and Ward; Working the Light or developing vision and style. both landscape-y books but great pictures and handy comments through out.

Thanks - wow - so many suggestions in one afternoon! This is my first time on talk photography so thanks very much. Will look these books up

The Blaenau Ffestiniog book I think was a good idea. I think having looked at the other suggestions that what I really want is a book of photographs by inspirational photographers rather than tips of how to create them. I must confess my complete ignorance in this area. I am new to photography as a hobby and it is fast becoming a great passion but I dont know of many photographers at all apart from Mario Testino! I think books which have photographs that demonstrate exceptional creativity is what I am looking for. Something that will stand the test of time and technology.
