As a rule, I don't like giving poor feedback and am far more likely to praise than pan but the service I received today from Jessops (the company and one member of staff at the Exeter High Streey store) was not what I expect from any company, least of all one that's struggling.
Doing a quick "stock check" of printing supplies etc, I realised that I am getting low on paper/ink for my Selphy printer. A quick Google showed Jessops as being reasonably competitive on price using their collect in store facility. I duly hit the relevant buttons and waited for the text to tell me my KP108IP was ready for collection. A £2 bus journey later saw me dropped off right outside the shop so in I went. Handed over my confirmation printout and showed the man my "ready to collect" text and off he went to get my pack. Well, a pack... Canon have recently started doing a plain paper version of the paper which is a fair bit cheaper - the paper is lighter weight and isn't pre printed on the reverse for postcard use - which is what I use my printer for. I spotted their mistake before paying and showed the chap my order confirmation which clearly said KP108IP rather than the KP108IN they were trying to fob me off with. At this point, the incompetent woman behind the desk piped up with "They're exactly the same." Well, they're not! The chap then went onto the Jessops website and found the paper on there (the incompetent woman having told us that it wasn't listed) and the only listing was the postcard version (the one I was after). I asked if they could get me a couple of packs of the correct paper and he said that in all honesty he couldn't guarantee it, so off I went.

If I wasn't already going to be in town to post something and pick up a copy of AP, I would be even more peed off than I am but for now, I'm happy just slagging them off (deservedly) and happy to use them as a showroom for the internet (something I've always been against in the past). If I were more peed off, I would be writing a proper letter to their customer services and CEO to complain, not only about the company's incompetence but also about the dimwitted woman's.

Not ordered any paper/ink packs off t'interweb yet, another local shop is making enquiries to see if they can get me a couple of packs - 216 sheets plus what I have in stock already should be plenty for a couple of years!

In the past and at their old premises (to which my collection text directed me...), there were a few knowlegeable and helpful members of staff but they seem to have kept on the box shifters and slackjaws rather than those with a brain cell and a clue as to how to deal with people.

To be fair, the young chap who I dealt with this morning was quite helpful and was at least honest! She was a waste of space and an oxygen thief!

My experience of jessops is pretty good actually, always friendly and very knowledgable. Suppose there will always be exceptions (which does not make it acceptable) . The problem they have is like all high street retailers is that they are becoming trial showrooms!

Id agree with wolfy, my local Jessops are all excellent.

I called in on Friday to buy a billingham bag( a big outlay for me) I was looking at the 445 but wanted to see a 70-200 2.8 lens in it for size. I asked the chap who then looked at me like I'd 2 heads, anyway off he went to get it, he came back with a 17-85 lens and said " try that instead, the 70-200 is at the back of the cabinet"

Bought a camera and twin lens kit from the ex demo and used section of the Jessops website. Arrived on Saturday - camera lcd covered in fingerprints and light scratches, big smudge on the 18-55 lens front element (fingerprint?) and worst of all - no 55-210 lens. :bang:

Needless to say it's going back - just hope they don't accuse me of nicking the second lens - it wasn't in the box when I got it! Do they not check things before sending them - it would have taken them only 2 minutes to a) realise there was only 1 lens and b) Give the lcd and lens a quick clean.

I was a bit wary about buying from the ex-demo and used section but I know 2 people who bought Nex cameras from there and they both arrived looking brand new and unmarked, so thought I would take a chance. (The only thing mentioned in the description was damage to the cardboard box).

Aye, I've not had the best of luck with the Exeter branch, I rang them to enquire as to the stock levels of what I wanted (cant remember what it was now, some bit of kit or another), asked them to put it aside and duly drove from Bideford... lo and behold, item not in stock.
Easy mistake to make I suppose, but their attitude wasn't exactly encouraging.
The Barnstaple branch isn't bad though, which is just as well since the two other local photography kit shops are slightly less use than a fart in a hurricane.

I have been into a number of their branches around the UK and NI, and the only store that even acknowledged I had walked in the door was my local store in Bolton, Lancs. Every other store they were too busy checking their nails / phones / picking their nose to even say hello and ask what I wanted - so they lost out when I went to Argos and bought my Canon EOS 650D! (Yes I know I could probably have got it cheaper elsewhere!)

Never had a problem with the Aberdeen branch, always helpful and very knowledgable. I also had a great time at the branch in Milton Keynes last year. They took cameras off display and lenses out of the display cases and let me play with them for about an hour before I decided to walk off.

There's always going to be plenty people that are poor at their jobs unfortunately. That's the world we live in. Maybe you should get a job in jessops and make that store the best in the country. I bet my money someone would complain on the Internet in a wee thread about you too :p

Easy answer. Hand back the bag and tell the chap "I'd buy it, but my cash is at the back of my wallet".

Lol very good , I would have loved to have seen his face

A few years back, I applied for a job there but since I was a keen photographer rather than a salesman (according to the manager), I didn't even get an interview. Back then, the local branch had a few good, honest staff members but they all seem to have been dropped in favour of slackjaws who don't care as long as they meet their targets.

I made the same mistake

looking back I can understand, I mean they are a 'business' not a camera club
99% of their customers go there to buy a camera, not to learn to take pictures, and I bet more than half of the camera gear they sell never get used

I once went to bath to collect a tripod head I wanted for that weekend, and they tried to fob me off with an ex demo one as brand new. Very badly scratchedetc so when I pointed it out they offered me a £10 discount. It felt like it had a bucket of sand in the movement. All that way and cost for nothing.

Add that to my 50D fiasco and I won't use them again.

A few weeks ago i spend over £4k in LCE after walking out of jessops because the man was questioning why i wanted a 7d over a 5d. Then i had the manager try and sell me the 5d. So i walked out, went to LCE spend an hour talking and purchasin my gear before going back to jessops with the equipment in the bags to buy a microfiber cloth! There faces were priceless and there customer service SHOCKING!!

I have walked out of Jessops a few times due to the lack of service, I once waited 25 min with only one person in front of me but only one person serving, my local Maidstone Jessops are a lot more helpfull.

That's pretty poor. And a shame you had you had the experience you had with them.
