Not sure what it is or how its spelt but i see it a lot on pictures where the lights are just coloured circles all oof.

How do you acheive that typ of shot.

eg, a string of Xmas lights but they are simply coloured circles. Nothing is distinguishable really other than the colours

It is the effect created by having a shallow depth of field!

correct,
but there is no forground interest to be shot. Its purely for the effect of the lights/circles

Something like this

Do i simply focus the lens to as close to me as poss and then use an f 1.8 or 2.8 or 4 etc something quite large. Is it anything to do with shutter speed too, ie do i have to have along exposure, or is it purely focusing and f stop

Cheers all,

I did wonder whether i was thinkingthere was something far more technical involved.

If its simply out of focus and shallow DOF....then I should be quite good at that!!!

I have a few to process from last night ;) If you want it abstract, go to your smallest F number (1.4 is mine), and then go to manual focus. Point at lights, get the exposure right, and then ensure you are out of focus enough to get the effect.
