Yes
I can understand the concept of having a background softly out of focus in order to highlight the sharpness in the foreground subject.

What I just can't grasp is the idea of, or desire in having a shot, for arguments' sake, a Christmas tree and its' lights completely out of focus over 100% of the viewing area, where's the skill in that , or am I missing something obvious here?

I'd really like to know...

Thanks.

There isnt a skill to it, its just another one of those things... If you dont like it, dont shoot it and move on.

In view of the strap line.... "Talk Basics If you are new to photography, or just have a question you think is basic, then fire away! Absolutely no question is too silly or basic for us in here."....I was hoping for something other than " If you don't like it, don't shoot it and move on".

What was the question, sorry but "am I missing something?" is always going to be a subjective question and bokeh is very much a like it or not, move on if you don't thing.

Just out of interest, what sort of answer were you looking for? I suspect you asked the wrong question to get it (and on a monday night as well.. you get friendlier answers towards the end of the week ;)).. ..

With all due respect there isn't an awful lot to expand on regarding a shot of "a Christmas tree and its' lights completely out of focus over 100% of the viewing area"

It's very much personal taste as with any form of art.

If it's not your cup of tea then you simply don't shoot it or entertain yourself with it in the same way that i personally have no interest in HDR so therefore I don't go there.

You gave a specific item, I gave a specific answer. You say you understand shallow DOF photography, but don't under stand why you would want 100% out of focus.

People want that look because they like it, if you don't like it, then don't do it.
I don't know what else can be the answer??

I shan't bother helping a downright rude poster such as yourself again.

I don't think anyone is up their own backsides. You asked a very general question, and got simple answers. I think if you were more specific, you may get a better response....

You really should have stuck around for a bit and get a feel for this forum, I have been on many forums over the years since the early days of forums. I do have to say, this is one of the friendliest and easy going forums I have ever joined. You will be hard pushed to find a forum out there where you don't get aggro. If you ask a question that seem a little silly on other forums, you get a right old bashing. Where as here you may get a reply that seems a little off hand, but you just have to plod along and get the feel of how the forum flows. It really is ever so friendly when you get into it

Unless in your first 10 posts you suggest that all the members are located between the lower back and top of the legs

Oh dear.
