Hi guys,

Although the 30d isn't a bad camera, there are things that I would like it to do/have and it doesn't/can't. I made a list of the things that I really like to do and as a result what I want and came up with the following

I want to use it for -
Landscape
Portraits
(Sport (Cycling) when I get posted back to UK)
Wedding
Event/gigs

Things I'd like -
Better af
Weather proofing
fast frame rate
good iso ability

Now once I'd done this the natural choice was turn to the dark side and get a d700 or d3. Unfortunately, if i'm going to save up that much money it's going to take some time and I'd have to sell all my canon glass and start from scratch. I was really looking forward to the 5d Mk II, but why couldn't they have gone the same way as Nikon and put the 1d Mk III focussing in it and made it faster? It just seems to be too much rooted in the pure landscape and studio market.

So... Would the 5d Mk II work? Should I save for a 1d Mk III, try and pick up a second hand 1d Mk II and continue saving for upgrade in the future, or something else??

Sorry to start another thread like this, but the wife is getting sick of me fretting! Many thanks in advance.

In your situation I think I would be looking for a used 1D MKIIn. It fiits most of your needs really well and I think the high ISO is pretty good too (Just not sure how it compares to the comnpetition)

Thanks. Is there really such a big difference between the Mk II and the Mk IIn though?

Quite a tall order, and it's unlikely you will be able to meet all your needs in a single body.

To be able to get a better af and weather sealing you would need a 1 series body.

You could go along the route of a 1D MKII N and a 5D (MKI), just because the 5d MKII is out it doesn't automatically make the 5D a bad camera, and the s/h price is pretty good.

So you could probably pick both the bodies up for less than a 5D MKII

This combination would tick all your boxes for you.

Yep, I was putting down my dream sheet and canon don't have anything in my budget that would fit. I'd love some input on what's going to come closest though. That's two saying 1d mk IIn, and I have to say it's getting a little confusing. As far as I'm aware there weren't any major upgrades with the n. What makes it so much better and worth the large jump in second hand prices?

Everything except the cycling looks like classic 5D stuff.....cycling, I'd want a 1D2(N) unless you can convince them to pedal slowly on sunny days.

Again, a vote here for 2 second hand bodies... a 1dmkII and a 5dmkI
This would give you a really strong set up for less then the price of a 5dmkII.
You wouldnt have to change lens systems, and would have two great cameras

Im unsure of the REAL advantage of the mkIIn over a mkII and would also be curious to find out

I had a 1DMK2n. The most obvious difference is the larger preview screen on the n. If you're used to a larger screen I think you'd probably find the small screen of the non-n a bit tedious. Apart from that there are a few minor tweaks - quicker start-up time, improved buffer, differences in the way you can choose to write to the CF or SD cards. There's possibly a few others, I can't remember them all now. I think they changed the menus somewhat with Picture Style settings being introduced.

I should steer clear, but I'm going to do it anyway:)

Conservative prices you'd get for your current kit:

70-200mm f/2.8 L - £700
17-40mm f/4 - £400
Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 - £130
50mm f/1.8 - £60
30D + grip - £300 + £100

Giving you around £1700 to play with... That would get you a brand new D700 body, all you'd have to get is lenses... Get a Nikon-fit Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8, Nikon 50mm & 85mm f/1.8's, and a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 - that will cover all your bases. Taking decent used prices as a guide, £150 for the 24-70, you could get the primes for under £300, and the 70-200mm f/2.8 rolls in at £500 new, or £370 used on the Bay of Fleas... Obviously, you don't have to buy all the lenses at once - so around £750 for the lenses. Not that much to save up ;)

Come to the Dark Side - we have cookies!

IT BURNS MY EYES!!!!!

Or you could just tell him where to stick his D700 and get the recommended 1dMKii and a 5d ;)

The older Pro bodies are a steal - the MKII n is really really very nice, superb IQ and the AF is really good.

I'd be much for inclined to go one of those, than say a 50D.

Thanks everyone. The 2 body idea does sound good. All I have to do now is save the money and find a couple of bargains...

Ok, so I've just been out and collected a new body. What do you think??
