So, my wife has a BMW series 1, and when starting the car an audible bleep and a light in a bulb comes on -

Can anyone tell me what it means? The manual is a little ambiguous, and I am sorry to ask as I'm sure it's obvious to experts!
And is it safe to drive?

Thanks in advance

If it's like a Vauxhall( they are both German) it means there's a light bulb out.. Safe to drive, Yes. All you have to do is check to see which one's out and change it, Sadly I think you might have to get an authorized BMW mechanic to re set the on board computer if it doesn't register the new bulb.

I could be wrong though

Richard T, that does make sense! As I say, without having a car brain, it didn't cross my mind :) Even I should be able to go and get the right light bulb etc and see what I can do from there. Thanks for your super fast response Richard T, it's much appreciated.

if it looks OK when you check it will be a number plate light ;)

can't tell you how many times i've had to check a car for a so called electrical fault because "all the lights are working but the warnings on the dash" when its a blown number plate bulb :bonk:

That's "Bulb of exterior lighting failed"

Probably one of the downlighters you get in the door handles that light the floor when you unlock it. Have a look - probably only three working.

Once changed will probably reset itself too, if not places like kwik fit now can reset the computer for you once you've fixed it.

It's not any of the main lights as they would show different symbols....... Sorry, should have put that above.
