Other than looking very slightly cosmetically different and no doubt a few £ what is the difference between a 3 series and a 4 series?

I get that 3 series is smaller than a 5 series which is smaller than a 7 series. But the 3 & 4 seem to be very similar.

The 3 series comes as a 4 door saloon and estate. The 4 series is a 2 door coupe or 4 door hatchback.
Inside they are pretty similar although not sure if 4 is slightly roomier.

Great cars but don't really understand why so many models

As far as I know the old 3series range was split in two, so the old 3series coupe is now called a 4series (with a few modifications as its a new model). Same with the old 1series coupe becoming a 2series.

I think the idea is that the 4 series has a slightly more sporty image than the 3 series; the 4 Series has a 2 coupe, a 2 door convertable and the 5 door gran coupe

The 3 series has the 4 door saloon, the estate car and the 5 door gran tourismo

Similar splits seem to apply to 1 & 2 series and 5 & 6 series

I think it's about having a wider range to appeal to more customers

It's probably so sales reps can say to their colleagues "oh so you only got a 3 this year then ?"

There whole no. system is very confusing. From what I read the odd are meant to be the more conservative family type cars and the even the slightly sportier. So some ranges cross over a lot in size/looks and style.

Do the indicators work on the 4 series, but not on any of the others?

BMW indicators work very well, or at least the ones in South Africa do. I've always used them, to indicate what I've just done...:p
