Yes
OK, so having lived with our old video and dvd player for many many years I finally got fed up of it stopping and skipping so lashed out £50 on a Sony blu ray player.
Now I need to buy a couple of good films to watch with the kids and wife over Christmas, but what to buy..?

The youngest is 11 and has enjoyed all the Hobbit/Lord of the rings stuff on dvd or at the cinema, I like dark thrillers and the others both like most stuff - any suggestions much appreciated, but most should be watch-able by all the family.
Any Bond/Bourne supremacy type of films worth seeking out ?
How about any good wildlife/Attenborough type of programs ?
And by the way, anyone remember a French thriller from back in the late '80's set mainly in the metro that I seem to remember as being good ?

What do you suggest ?

I think the film is called Metro.
Christopher Lambert.

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back

Your French film might be Subway. It is by Besson and is good, if a little odd.

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
.
You've gotta watch the trilogy,
you can't leave out return of the Jedi (y)
The 3 prequals are worth a look too,
if you are into star wars.
(In that order)
Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
and Revenge of the sith.

Shrek I II & III are good fun,
the 1st being the best.
Eragon is fun, loads of Dragons.

How to train your Dragon 1 & 2
totally stupid and good family fun.

Anything by Attenborough TBH
They are all excellent.

Lord of the Ring boxset is very good value at the moment :)

Dark Thriller

Cold in July
A Most Wanted Man
Syriana
Blue Rim
And any of the Cohen Brother Thrillers

:)

The new Godzilla
All the transformers
World war z
All the transporters
And everyone of every age would like the Lego movie

Subway (1985) directed by Luc Besson - Amazon shows a 2009 blu-ray release. I preferred Nikita and The Big Blue - the latter has also had a blu-ray release, although it's a little slow and more than a bit odd in places.. (and unusually for a Luc Besson film Jean Reno is not running around killing people..)

Brilliant. Many thanks for the replies - Subway it is.
There are a few suggestions that I have seen and loved - not sure the Girl with a dragon tattoo is suitable for my 11 year old but I loved it and the sequel.
Cohen Brothers are fab, we have the Shrek films, but there are lots I have never heard of so I'll go looking - cheers all !

Don't forget that your Bluray player will upscale your DVD's.

It's worth watching some old favourites, with improved visuals.

the 2 latest star trek films will kill an evening quite nicely
the matrix box set is another evening killer

when HMV was still around most towns quite a few of the bluray box sets could be had at bargain prices if you have one still open near you it might be worth a visit

He said "a couple", so I gave two!
I'm not sure that I've ever met anyone who say's a couple and means two :p
more than one, and less than half a dozen :D

Besides it would be like reading 3/4 (or 2/3rds) of the way through a book and stopping.

So if youre part of married couple, how many other people are you married to them Chris :p

Amazon is my friend it seems - I have just placed an order for a whole bunch of stuff, not just a couple....

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

15 others Mike, its say so in the vowels.
4 better
4 worse
4 richer
4 poorer

:D

The best thing I have ever seen for Bluray picture quality is a film called Samsara by Ron Fricke. It's more a collection of images but took years to make, in loads of countries and shot in 70mm.

Whether it's entertaining is another matter but for showcasing picture quality it's right up there.

As @Alastair said in post #19, it was called Subway, one of my favourite films.
Mark also said It first in post 3....which I acknowledged in post 5.
Keep up ;)

, it was called Subway, one of my favourite films. Sandwich bars
(y)
Now stop arguing you two or I'll slap your legs :D
