A few days ago my Tesco internet went down for a 24 hr period.
To be fair that is probably the second time in a lot of years,
that is why I have stuck with them TBH although they are not cheap,
I'm getting 2.5Meg for just under £20 / month.

Yesterday my POP3 mail wouldn't send
(Tesco's email addys and outlook express)
So I did all the usual tweaks bashes and swearies.
All else failed so I called Tesco's Techy support,
The recorded message "say's alls well"
But when you get through to a human
"They are having issues" and are working on it!

24 hours later Its still off, so another call
apparently I'm lucky! Some have been off for 4 days!
"and they are working on it"

Its no good swearing at the guy on the phone is it ?

No not really............

but I do feel a little better, :D
even though my POP3 is still not working and they
have no idea when it might be.........
Just use the "web based mail"
was the less than helpful reply!

FFS if I wanted web based mail
I would be using it!

Rant off, for now at least

If you get Virgin in your area I'd change - approx £18 per month for 10Mbit download ( and I checked it online) - with special intro offers available from time to time.

I wouldn't, they packet shape and randomly slow down your connection at times to cope with their nasty habit of not buying enough upstream bandwidth from their exchanges.

www.bethere.co.uk is where it's at, if you can change :) £40 cashback from quidco too...

I'm the other side of town from the exchange, and well...

I very rarely have a problem with Virgin cable

Virgin Digital and Milton Keynes never the twain shall meet, I'm sure Chris knows what I mean.

Not sure where you live in MK, but my exchange is one of the pilots for the FTP (fibre to property) rollout and have been told by my friendly neighbourhood Openreach engineer I could well have a shiny fibre optic cable by early next year. :D

Thanks for the tips guys
I have "unlimited" which is useful as my son is always on line killing ninja alien mutants
or what ever it is :D

Mark, I did hear that MK was supposed to be getting free broadband around
2010 but as yet........... :(

I run off the Fenny Stratford exchange BTW

I'm the other side of town from the exchange, and well...

Dave, thanks. I typed in my phone number from the link
and I will "probably" get 3Meg not a lot different from what I am getting now
admittedly its a couple of quid / month cheaper though.

Know your woes there Chris, have had similar issues with Tiscali I mean TalkTalk as they now appear to be, went down about a week back, whole Internet, called support to be told, the service is down, will be for 48 Hours, when I said "So you will be deducting 48 Hours worth from my Bill, wont you" got the reply, it doesn't work that way so NO, few heated words with a manager later, got my discount :bat:

Also there Automated system was saying "No Issues on the entire Network at this time", pointed this out to them, and they may wish to change it to save there customers the cost of sitting on hold, to be told "That is not there concern, and they are not worried about it"

Great customer care being shown.

I've been with a small company called Aquiss now for 3 years. £25 a month, 30gb download limit on peak times, and unlimited during off peak (inc. weekends) and pay monthly.

0 downtime and excellent service, can't recommend them enough.

Cheap broadband = cheap service and don't think that going with a bid name will make a lot of difference either. The number of horror stories I've heard from people is shocking, as well as my own experiences with Virgin when they billed me for a year despite me not using it and trying to cancel every month! :(

You would have thought that they would have
changed the robot voice to one that actually told the truth wouldn't you Stu?
at least it "only" costs 4p a minute to phone tesgrots
and not some premium rate number.
The rebate argument come later when I know how long its been off for :bat:

That sounds great!
unfortunately for me, what ever suppliers "search" I do they never quote more than
"upto" 3meg.
Pretty poor for a "city" that has a very large E-commerce presence!

I switched to Sky internet because Tiscali were bought out by Rob Rob, sorry Talk Talk. Anyway they work out quite cheap if you have Sky already because they bundle it all together. They are also doing several months free at the moment if you switch. Most of them are simply re-selling BT internet anyway so the actual speed has little to do with them.

Another vote for Virgin Cable...constant 10mb :)

As far as I am aware they dont packet shape.
Thier fair use policy is very clearly stated and restricts your download to 25% speed for 5 hours after you have downloaded too much

I don't have any complaints about Virgin.

The system went down last week for a couple of hours, very early on Sunday morning. When I called to check, I was given an instant £10 credit.

if only virgin fibre had more coverage..

im surprised more people havent had problems with BTs upgrades to 21CN ADSL, it keeps breaking our routers with older firmwares. which of course isnt BTs fault is it..

i wish BT would of pulled their finger out of their arse years ago when NTL were rolling out fibre. missed the boat there didnt they.

This was I believe the last area built in MK without cable
several companies have talked about running it through here, over the years,
but talk is cheap as the saying goes.

I might be moving in a few months anyway,
so I guess for now,
I will just have to put up with it and change when I do move

Oh BTWdid I say

"Bloody Tesco's" ? ! :D

its still off!

We have a contract with Tesco Broadband in work, but we are only looking over Tesco staff members connections, Anyway, I would have said though that Tesco is quite dear. Its sold on behalf of another company under the Tesco brand name but I wouldn't personally go with that company either.
2.5meg for £20 is rather appauling... :(

I think O2 are doing 20meg for about the same price...

The exchange won't allow much more than 2.5Meg :(
and as said no cable here or fibre optics either :(

Dunno if you remember my problems last month, no internet at all for nearly 2 weeks which wasn't pipex/tiscali/talktalks fault, it was my router/wiring :bang:
Last call to them when we had decided to change was met with the reply that because we were changing they weren't going to even try and find the problem, but I might still owe them money........
New supplier managed to turn us back on without any problems and a stinking letter to Pipex head office has resulted in a refund of a whole month's charge

At least you got a refund Ingrid
Tesco have admitted its their fault but as yet no offer of a refund

I'm a happy BeThere customer too :) They don't impose any limits on your connection whatsoever, truly unlimited is their connection. They do have a fair usage policy, but they've only enforced it once according to the users on their own forum (the forum where you can talk to people who work for bethere, and where upcoming announcements are made to us BEings ^^).

Virgin slow down your connection if you download too much during peak hours. With BeThere, if you want to download a large file, you just download it there and then, no questions asked.

Virgin don't throttle 50 MB and above...

For a 24mb package that's not great.. I know Virgin have issues but they do supply the speeds and rarely have any of those things you mentioned happened to me..

I don't live in the Uk but my dad does, I visit often and for quite a while and never noticed a drop in speed.. It may just be in your area, but Cable vs ASDL is a no brainer in my mind.

Would never let my broadband come through anything associated with BT... not ever!

I only recently upgraded to Virgin 50mb. I was on their 20mb service previously. Test this if you want, I have here and at a friends house, at my mums too. Basically, download 3GB to 5GB early evening, and watch as your speed magically destroys itself until the next day. Its a policy choice of Virgins to cap over a certain daily download allowance....it does not happen on 50MB, the most expensive option has had this cap removed.

Cobra

A couple of things.

I'm surprised that as you live in Milton Keynes you only get 2.5 speed. Are you not in a great sprawling conurbation bristling with BT exchanges on every corner? I'm very rural and I get 1.8.:bang::bang::bang:

As you are in pest control, and TESCO are very definitely a pest, you appear to be the most qualified user of this forum to sort them out! Try some tesco bananas and threatening language?

EDIT: Straight up, I did NOT put those TESCO links in - how the hell did that happen?

I think Cobra deserves slow speed and email problems for writing in blue all time and giving me sore eyes and a migraine every time he posts...

I'm sure if he started posting in black all his woes would simply vanish...

It something they promised a couple of years ago Mark
but as yet it rather like rocking horse poo :(

Does seem to be heading that way doesn't it Gary? lol
Ah well its nice to see what you can't have sometimes :D

LOL the links are "affiliate" they magically appear
If you click one then do your shopping the site gets a kick back ;)

Yes for a large E commerce place its a pretty poor showing isn't it?
and dealing with Tesgrots like a common pest might well get me a stay at wood hill :D

PMSL have some pink then
Blue looks fine on a white background, don't tell me you have some obscure
coloured background?

I'm so sorry, I didn't realise... I actually use a very rare and obscure colour called grey... don't know if you've heard of it or not? If not, I can post you a sample swatch... :D
